With the Spanish Government pushing to enhance train travel, recent statistics reveal a concerning trend: Renfe’s conventional medium and high-speed services have experienced a decline in ridership. The CNMC report indicates a drop in passenger numbers across various types of train services in 2025 compared to the previous year.

- Cercanías services saw a minor decrease of 0.4%.
- Conventional medium and long-distance trains suffered a 10.8% decline, with occupancy falling from 67.9% in 2024 to 60.2%.
- High-speed medium-distance services also experienced a slight decrease of 0.7%, with occupancy rates at 77.5% compared to 79.3% in the prior year.

Interestingly, routes benefiting from competition recorded growth. For example, the liberalization of high-speed long-distance services led to a 12.2% increase in travelers. César Franco, an engineer, stated, “citizens prefer a conventional train that passes on time and does not break down.” Last year, Renfe’s punctuality report revealed troubling findings: medium-distance trains had an average delay of 15.4 minutes, and only 59.4% arrived on time or within five minutes of their schedule.

As we approach 2026, expectations are grim. Past incidents, such as the Adamuz accident, have led to significant disruptions, affecting many routes. Data from Renfe indicated that 28.8% of long-distance and high-speed trains were late in the first five months of 2026, with 11.7% experiencing delays of over 30 minutes.
