The Rise of N8N: Automating Workflows in the Digital Era

For many years,  Jan Oberhauser  worked in special effects (VFX) companies within the film and television industry. During this time, he recognized that  automating certain tasks  significantly streamlined both his work and that of his colleagues. This epiphany prompted him to completely pivot his career. Oberhauser founded an automation startup that he named N8N, which has emerged as one of the most promising European unicorns.

The Birth of N8N. Founded in 2019 in Berlin, Germany, Oberhauser aimed to create a  workflow automation platform  that distinguished itself through its  Open Source  approach. He preferred the term “Fair Code” over the conventional label used for many tech products. N8N can be used in various modes: either as a self-hosted solution that users can deploy on their own PC or server, or through its  plug-and-play  systems resembling traditional SAAS models with available subscription plans. The source code is readily available on GitHub for those interested in customization and tinkering.

What Does N8N Offer? N8N is designed to  automate a multitude of tasks . The platform integrates seamlessly with various third-party web applications and services while also incorporating internally developed tools. Recently, N8N has begun integrating AI models, which have quickly become a cornerstone of its automation capabilities. The  automation possibilities  are virtually limitless, offering practical applications such as:

  • Automatically saving email attachments from Gmail to Google Drive and sending notifications via Slack.
  • Sending alerts through Slack, WhatsApp, or Discord whenever a specific event occurs in an application.
  • Downloading files from an FTP server, converting them into different formats, processing the data, and distributing it via messaging channels.

A More Powerful IFTTT N8N is reminiscent of a  supercharged version of IFTTT , offering the capacity to chain a diverse set of tasks in a way that follows the “if this happens, then do that” model. However, its target audience is not just individual users—N8N also appeals to business clients, providing a compelling alternative to popular automation platforms like Zapier and Make, both of which lack self-hosting options. N8N’s user-friendly interface transforms tedious processes into engaging, almost exciting experiences, as evidenced by various YouTube tutorials.

N8N’s Continued Growth. Just a few months after its inception, N8N raised an initial investment of  $1.5 million  in 2020. By the following year, the company successfully secured another $12 million, and since then, it has seen exponential growth, largely fueled by the surge in  generative AI . N8N’s innovative approach has attracted both attention and investment.

A German Unicorn. With a notable recent funding round of  €55 million  ($65 million) boosting its valuation to  $350 million , N8N has established itself firmly as a unicorn. As reported by Bloomberg, the company’s valuation is projected to soar to  $2.3 billion  following additional investment from a venture capital firm.

AI Agents Integrated into Automation. N8N has surpassed  $40 million  in recurring subscription revenue. The integration of AI agents has significantly enhanced its automation capabilities. Within N8N’s workflows, users can now “call” upon any AI model to perform specific tasks. The output from these AI interactions can seamlessly feed into subsequent stages of the workflow, thus amplifying the system’s power.

In conclusion, Jan Oberhauser’s vision for N8N has not only filled a gap in the automation market but also laid the groundwork for future innovation in the realm of workflow automation. By successfully combining the concepts of fair code, user engagement, and AI technology, N8N represents a major shift in how businesses and individual users manage their various workflows, making tasks simpler and more efficient.
