Rising Controversy Surrounds Jette Nietzard and Her Comments on Israel and Palestine
In recent days, the political landscape in Germany has been ignited by the comments made by Jette Nietzard, co-chair of the Green Youth. Just ten days after the uproar over her “ACAB” sweater, the 26-year-old sparked further outrage with remarks regarding the ongoing conflict in Israel and Palestine. In a video posted on her organization’s Instagram account on October 7, 2023, she stated that “over 50,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis have died during military operations.” This characterization quickly drew criticism as it appeared to downplay the violent nature of the attacks carried out by Hamas.
Critics were quick to point out that her mention of “military operations” obscurely referred to the actions of terrorists who primarily targeted civilians rather than military objectives. Volker Beck, a member of the Green Party, expressed his concerns on social media, urging his party to reflect on its stance regarding Israel and to reconsider its minimization of Hamas’s attacks.
After the backlash, the original video was deleted and replaced with a revised version that included a transparency note. This disclaimer clarified that the earlier assertion did not adequately depict the October 7th events as an antisemitic terrorist attack. The press spokesman for the Green Youth, Djego Finkenstedt, explained to the media how the video was adjusted to more accurately reflect the situation.
Beck, who also chairs the German-Israeli Society, noted that he had intervened following the initial video’s release but regretted the absence of an apology. This sentiment was echoed by many who felt that Nietzard’s comments were dismissive of the tragedy that occurred.
In the subsequent video, she redirected her criticism toward Chancellor Friedrich Merz, arguing that Germany might need a leader who prioritizes human rights over merely being supportive of Israel. Nietzard claimed that around 1.9 million individuals in Gaza are facing dire humanitarian conditions due to Israeli blockades. “Israel is using hunger and restrictions on humanitarian aid as weapons against the people in Gaza, even though they have nothing to do with the ongoing conflict,” she stated.
While she acknowledges that Hamas operates as a terrorist organization exploiting civilians as shields, Nietzard insisted that this does not justify the bombing of hospitals or the treatment of civilians in the Gaza Strip. She called for the German government to take decisive action against Israel, including implementing sanctions against illegal settlers in the West Bank.
Repeated Instances of Controversy
Nietzard’s remarks follow a pattern of contentious statements that have attracted significant backlash. Earlier this year, she was at the center of another scandal after posting a photo on Instagram wearing a sweater with the anti-police slogan “ACAB” (All Cops Are Bastards). This sparked debates within her party, leading some prominent members to question her judgment and values as a political figure.
Nietzard’s political career has been marred by controversies since she took office as co-chair of the Green Youth in October 2024. Her past comments have not only sparked outrage but have also led to discussions about the values and direction of the Green Party. Critics argue that her actions undermine the party’s stance on important issues, including the value of law enforcement authority in a democratic society. Given her position and the subsequent backlash, it’s clear that the scrutiny on Nietzard is unlikely to diminish anytime soon.
