The Rise of Electric Mopeds in Barcelona
Barcelona is renowned for its vibrant motorcycle culture, boasting over half a million registered motorcycles. Among these, mopeds play a notable role, especially for young riders. However, facing growing environmental concerns, the city is actively seeking to phase out combustion mopeds.
Moped Statistics and Regulations
Currently, there are 32,000 mopeds registered in Barcelona, with a majority being combustion models. The moped is specifically designed for ease of access, allowing teenagers as young as 15 to ride them. The AM license, which requires only a closed-circuit skills test, further lowers the barrier for entry:
- Riders must be at least 15 years old.
- An AM license is obtainable through a relatively simple skill test.
- Passenger riding is prohibited until the age of 18.
- Mopeds must not exceed 50cc and can’t go faster than 45 km/h.
This combination of low engine specifications and minimal age restrictions makes mopeds a popular choice for younger riders.
A New Subsidy Program
In an effort to replace these combustion engines, the Government Commission has approved a new aid program aimed at incentivizing the transition from combustion mopeds to electric alternatives. With an initial budget of 15 million euros, the program aims to run until 2030.
Details of the Financial Aid
The subsidy will provide residents with a one-time payment of 600 euros. This amount covers between 16% to 40% of the cost of equivalent electric mopeds, according to the Ministry of Transport and Mobility. However, to qualify for the subsidy, applicants must first scrap their combustion mopeds.
The Barcelona City Council has made this process more accessible by designating specific depots, known as Serveis Municipals Barcelona, where residents can scrap their vehicles free of charge and simultaneously obtain the necessary certificate for applying for the subsidy.
Charging Solutions for Electric Mopeds
One of the most pressing questions from potential electric moped owners is, “Where can I charge it?” Acknowledging this issue, the city has secured a 3 million euro investment to establish a battery exchange network, set to begin operations this year. This initiative aims to mitigate the challenges of charging in densely populated areas where many residents live in shared accommodations.
The Vision for the Future
The Barcelona City Council has set an ambitious goal of integrating up to 20,000 electric mopeds into the city’s transportation landscape. This move represents a significant step towards comprehensively replacing gasoline-powered mopeds and improving air quality across the metropolitan area.
As Barcelona embarks on this transformative journey, the integration of electric mopeds could significantly enhance urban mobility while contributing to a more sustainable and eco-friendly cityscape.
