Changes to Renfe’s Pet Travel Policy

Renfe, Spain’s primary train service, has made a groundbreaking change in its pet travel policy, catering specifically to large dog owners. Starting July 21, dogs weighing up to 40 kg can accompany their owners in designated seating areas across all Renfe train lines, including AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, Intercity, Avant, and Media Distancia.

A Dream Come True for Dog Owners

For many dog lovers, like the author’s beloved Lola, traveling with a dog has often been a daunting challenge. With an estimated 15 million pets in Spain, a significant portion of which are dogs, this update reflects a broader recognition of the need for accessible and affordable pet travel options.

Before this policy change, pet owners faced significant constraints, as Renfe only permitted pets up to 10 kg in carriers. This shift not only enhances the travel experience for dog owners but also positions Renfe as a pioneer among European train operators.

Traveling with Your Dog: What to Expect

Beginning on World Dog Day, dog owners can expect a streamlined process for traveling with their pets. Here are the essentials:

  • Seating Arrangements: Dogs will sit next to their owners in designated window seats, which should allow for a comfortable experience.
  • Travel Requirements: Owners are expected to keep their dogs on a 1.5-meter non-extendable leash and utilize a muzzle during boarding, disembarking, and while at the station.
  • Travel Kit: Each pet ticket purchase includes a travel kit consisting of a seat cover and mat to ensure cleanliness throughout the journey.

Importance of this Change

This new policy effectively dismantles previous barriers faced by dog owners who often had to rely solely on cars for travel. It offers a newfound sense of freedom for those who wish to explore the beautiful landscapes of Spain without leaving their beloved pets behind.

For Renfe, this also represents a smart business move, creating an additional revenue stream with a €40 surcharge for large pet travel, potentially attracting a wider customer base in a competitive market.

Conditions for Travel

  • Ticket Purchase: Tickets can be secured through Renfe’s website, app, or at agency counters, and require an additional fee for pets.
  • Accessibility: Pet owners can board the train from any intermediate stop, enhancing flexibility in travel plans.
  • Capacity Limitations: Each train can accommodate a maximum of two large dogs, located in a special “pet-friendly” car.

Restrictions and Considerations

Even with these improvements, some restrictions remain:

  • Dogs exceeding 40 kg, puppies under one year, and certain breeds classified as dangerous are not permitted.
  • The service cannot be utilized on connecting trains or during periods of scheduled alternative transport.

For individuals who may have allergies or discomfort around dogs, Renfe has made provisions to ensure a comfortable environment on its trains.

By adopting this new pet travel policy, Renfe is not only recognizing the immense number of pet owners in Spain but is also transformationally enhancing their travel experiences. With this change, thousands can embark on adventures with their furry companions by their side.
