Forest Fire in San Luis: A Comprehensive Overview
A significant forest fire erupted in the mountains of San Luis, specifically around the Estancia Grande area. After more than 40 hours of relentless efforts, firefighters managed to contain about 85% of the blaze, which first ignited on the early morning of July 16 in the vicinity known as The Tall Peach. As the day progressed, the flames threatened sectors like Potrero de los Funes, prompting a massive firefighting operation to be mobilized around 1:00 PM.
Challenges in Combating the Flames
The fire began in a challenging location near the Berta Vidal de Battini dam, and rapidly spread upwards, propelled by strong winds. This situation complicated firefighting tasks, leading to a temporary halt in the operations of the National Fire Management System’s aircraft.
Efforts and Resources Deployed
Over 114 personnel, including volunteer firefighters, health workers, police forces, and municipal agents, participated in these intensive containment operations. Their collective efforts significantly mitigated further damage in Potrero de los Funes and surrounding residential areas.
In addition to ground forces, the firefighting team utilized three hydrant planes each capable of holding over 3,000 liters of water, and two helicopters for transporting personnel and discharging water. These aerial resources were pivotal in curbing the fire’s progress and safeguarding Route 18.
Ground operations employed 4×4 vehicles and specialized equipment to effectively battle the advancing flames. Together with aerial support, these teams worked cohesively to protect nearby towns from potential hazards.

The local Primary Health Care Center (CAPS) extended its services to offer 24-hour medical assistance for those affected by smoke inhalation. Preventative evacuations took place for families near the fire’s path, although no casualties have been reported so far.
