President Erdoğan Takes Action on Smart Drugs for Cancer Treatment

President  Recep Tayyip Erdoğan  has officially initiated efforts to ensure the procurement of  smart drugs  used in cancer treatment. These specialized medications can cost up to  500,000 Turkish Lira , creating a significant financial burden for patients. Acknowledging the issue, Erdoğan has issued two critical instructions: “Address the difficulties in procuring smart drugs. Let’s produce our own domestic smart drugs, like TOGG and SİHA.”

Concerns Raised by Lawmakers

During meetings with lawmakers, concerns regarding the procurement of smart drugs and citizen expectations were communicated to President Erdoğan. Members of the  Justice and Development Party (AKP)  expressed that, “There are numerous grievances regarding smart drugs. The state does not cover the costs. Citizens are forced to seek reimbursement through courts, a process that can take at least two years. They may only receive their money back with a court decision. This issue is among the top complaints from our constituents.”

Instructions for Action

In response to these concerns, Erdoğan directed relevant ministries and agency heads to “conduct a study to resolve the existing issues related to smart drugs. Take the necessary steps so that our citizens do not suffer.” Following his directive, it has been reported that new measures will be discussed to simplify the procurement of smart drugs in the upcoming period.

An Urgent Call for Domestic Production

Further addressing the issue, Erdoğan asserted that “Taking temporary measures is not enough. For a definitive solution, we should produce our own smart drugs. Just as we have developed TOGG, drones, and SİHAs, we can create our own medications. Let’s expedite our efforts in this area and provide all necessary  R&D  support.”

What are Smart Drugs?

  •  Cancer characteristics  can vary from patient to patient and depend on the type of cancer, necessitating personalized medications.
  • Medications used in personalized cancer treatment protocols are commonly referred to as  smart drugs .
  •  Smart drugs  target and neutralize specific structures in cancer cells that operate more aggressively than normal cells. The cost of smart drug therapies can reach up to  500,000 Turkish Lira  today.

The Path Ahead

As the action taken by President Erdoğan begins to unfold, citizens are likely to witness advances in the availability and affordability of smart drugs. The government’s commitment to both understanding and resolving issues in cancer treatment is essential, especially when lives depend on access to various medical resources. Moving towards local production of these drugs serves not only to alleviate financial burdens but also to bolster the nation’s medical autonomy. As these initiatives progress, patients can remain hopeful for a future where high-cost treatments become more accessible, ultimately improving treatment outcomes for many battling cancer.
