Corpus Christi Celebration in Plaza Mayor de Lima
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi will unfold as planned on Sunday, June 14, in the atrium of the Lima Cathedral. Despite recent vehicular restrictions established by the Metropolitan Municipality of Lima (MML), the celebration will proceed normally, welcoming faithful from across the city.
Schedule of Events
The celebration will officially commence at 8:30 am, uniting a diverse assembly of parish communities, brotherhoods, priests, religious orders, and laypeople. They will come together to accompany Jesus in the Eucharist during the procession. Attendees are encouraged to arrive early due to pedestrian access only, given the vehicle restrictions in place.
The theme for this year’s event is inspired by the motto: “Like Toribio de Mogrovejo, united in the Body of Christ, we are one People.” The Holy Mass, presided over by Cardinal Carlos Castillo, Archbishop of Lima, begins at 10:00 am. This Eucharistic celebration will also be broadcast live on TV Perú and the Archbishopric’s YouTube channel, allowing many to partake virtually.
Procession and Activities
Following the Mass, the processional route will commence, with the procession passing by four beautifully decorated altars set up around Plaza Mayor. This event will feature participants from various groups, including bishops, priests, seminarians, and parochial school students.
Additionally, this year’s activities include a twinning network aimed at collecting non-perishable food items for local community kitchens, cribs, and parish dining rooms. The Archbishopric of Lima has invited attendees to bring donations, which can be delivered to designated collection points at various locations within the plaza.
Access and Logistics
Public access to Plaza Mayor will begin at 8:30 am. Parish delegations and communities will be arranged based on their arrival time, thus early arrival is recommended to secure a good spot. The best routes for getting to the venue include Jirón Callao, Jirón de la Unión, Jirón Carabaya, Jirón Conde de Superunda, and Jirón Junín. To ensure the comfort of attendees, facilities such as public restrooms, medical care spots, and accommodations for people with disabilities will be available.
Vehicle Restrictions in the Historic Center
It’s important to note that the MML has imposed temporary vehicular restrictions around the Historic Center of Lima due to scheduled mobilizations inspired by political activities related to the presidential candidate, Roberto Sánchez. This measure is designed to enhance road safety and maintain public order and was implemented following specific intelligence reports in coordination with the Peruvian National Police.
In conclusion, the Corpus Christi celebration promises to be a significant communal gathering, offering an opportunity for reflection, connection, and charity among the faithful, even amidst the city’s restrictions.
