What are the implications of Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria’s statements regarding their ambitions for a fight against Islam Makhachev? How has Topuria reacted to Oliveira’s claims about wanting a title shot? What achievements have both Topuria and Makhachev accomplished recently that could impact their future matchups? How does Oliveira view his own status within the UFC after his losses and victories leading up to this point?
Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria are all-in on the Islam Makhachev sweepstakes. After Topuria announced that he was done making the weight cut to 145 pounds and vacated his belt in February, the now-former featherweight champion appeared to be heading directly toward a lightweight title shot against UFC champion Makhachev. However, Oliveira has also made it abundantly clear that he expects his Makhachev rematch to be next, which hasn’t sat well with Topuria. The Georgian-Spaniard has since gone on the offensive against Oliveira, telling "Do Bronx" to "stay quiet," harping on Oliveira’s losses and seemingly taking jabs at the former 155-pound champion’s intelligence. Speaking Wednesday on Uncrowned’s "The Ariel Helwani Show," Oliveira said he sees exactly what Topuria is trying to do.
"It’s been 15 years [since I first started] in the UFC, respecting everybody. I’ve said it already — my story is written there. Everybody can see it," Oliveira said through a translator. “He’s coming from [his position] as a champion of the featherweight division, and now trying to come up [to lightweight] and show this [level of superiority]. But I have firepower on my wrists and I’m really focused on the belt itself. It’s not about who it’s going to be on my way, but getting the title.
“He’s just trying to dig out a fight [for himself],” Oliveira continued. “He’s saying a lot of crap. I really respect his fights, the way he’s come up and everything, but he’s being very disrespectful now and is saying a lot of things he shouldn’t.” Although he’ll cease being an official UFC champion once Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes collide for the vacant belt on April 12, Topuria still carries his status as an undefeated titleholder up to lightweight after pulling off one of the best years ever seen in MMA. Topuria earned Uncrowned’s 2024 Fighter of the Year award after knocking out Volkanovski and Max Holloway in back-to-back bouts.
Makhachev, similarly, made history in 2024 when he broke the record for most consecutive UFC lightweight title defenses, notching his fourth with an effortless victory over Renato Moicano. Oliveira is 2-1 since losing to Makhachev in 2022, sandwiching a split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan between impressive victories over Beneil Dariush and Michael Chandler, the last of which came in November during Oliveira’s most recent Octagon appearance. Despite not being told a title shot was guaranteed with that win, Oliveira felt it was expected. If that doesn’t happen, it’ll be disappointing.
“Bottom line is Makhachev is the guy that has to be beat,” Oliveira said. “So if [Topuria’s] the next one to fight him, then so be it. I’m just an employee here. If he’s given the chance and not me, I’m going to keep fighting, keep preparing and keep waiting for my turn to come around. It is what it is.
“We’re coming out of a great fight [against Chandler]. I had the issue with my [knee] there, but essentially I’m really looking for a title fight now. It’s been a lot of work that I’ve put into it, 15 years with the UFC, and essentially just waiting for a phone call. That’s it.”
After Tsarukyan suffered a back injury ahead of a scheduled Makhachev title fight this past January, UFC CEO Dana White stated that Tsarukyan will have to work his way back to the shot. An Oliveira rematch arose in discussions soon after, and Tsarukyan was open to it despite having already won the first fight.
Oliveira isn’t in the same boat. If he had his way, he’d ideally return to fight for a title of some kind during International Fight Week at UFC 317 on June 28. Unless there’s a belt attached, rematching Tsarukyan isn’t of interest. “It all comes down to the title,” Oliveira said. “If not Islam, maybe [the UFC’s ceremonial] BMF [belt]. There’s a lot of talk about [Dustin] Poirier fighting somebody else, Islam going up. I don’t know, I can’t concern myself with all these things. All I gotta do is prepare myself and be ready when it comes time.
“We are working hard on that [target date for a return]. Our whole team has been working hard on that for a while now. It would be great. Hopefully, you can see me on fight week [soon].”
Charles Oliveira Responds to ‘Very Disrespectful’ Ilia Topuria as Lightweight Title Chase Heats Up
In the ever-evolving landscape of the UFC lightweight division, where dreams of championship glory drive fighters to their limits, tensions have recently flared between Charles Oliveira and rising contender Ilia Topuria. Known for his tenacity both inside and outside the octagon, Oliveira is not one to back down from a challenge—or criticism. In a recent interview, the former lightweight champion did not hold back when responding to remarks made by Topuria, whom he labeled “very disrespectful.”
Setting the Stage: A Volatile Division
As of late, the lightweight division has seen fierce competition with a mix of veteran fighters and new talent vying for the title. Oliveira, a seasoned athlete who held the championship until his loss to Islam Makhachev in May 2022, is keen on regaining his status. On the other hand, Topuria, who has rapidly ascended the ranks, is making his own case for a title shot. With both fighters expressing their ambitions, the tensions have only amplified as they navigate their paths.
Oliveira’s Perspective: A Champion’s Response
In his recent comments, Oliveira expressed dismay at Topuria’s perceived lack of respect for the established fighters in the lightweight division. “When you come into the UFC, especially in a division as stacked as lightweight, you need to acknowledge the work the fighters before you have done,” Oliveira remarked. The Brazilian veteran emphasized the importance of respect in the sport, particularly given the sacrifices fighters make to reach such high levels of competition.
“Topuria is an exciting fighter, I won’t deny that. But calling out champions and established fighters without showing respect for them is a mistake,” he added. Oliveira’s experience as a fighter who transformed from a once-struggling athlete into a champion grants him a unique perspective on the dynamics of competition and respect.
Topuria’s Rise: A New Challenger Emerges
Ilia Topuria has garnered significant attention with his rapid rise through the ranks. Known for his impressive grappling skills and knockout power, he has become a fan favorite and a threat to anyone in the division. However, his willingness to publicly challenge established fighters such as Oliveira has been perceived by some as crossing the line.
Topuria has asserted that he is ready for a title shot and has publicly stated that he wants to take down Oliveira, whom he considers a significant hurdle in his career. “I’m not here to play games. I want the title, and I’m willing to fight anyone standing in my way,” he stated in a recent press conference. His brazen attitude has captured the attention of the media and fans but has also invited backlash from seasoned fighters like Oliveira.
The Importance of Respect in Combat Sports
Oliveira’s critique belongs to a broader conversation about respect and sportsmanship in mixed martial arts. While the sport thrives on competition and banter among fighters, there is an underlying expectation that competitors acknowledge each other’s achievements. For veterans like Oliveira, who have battled through adversity to reach the pinnacle of the sport, recognition of their journey is essential.
“It’s not just about winning fights; it’s about the journey you take to get there. I’ve fought through injuries, setbacks, and losses to be where I am today,” said Oliveira. His impassioned plea underscores the importance of humility in combat sports—a principle that fighters should uphold as they rise through the ranks.
What’s Next for Oliveira and Topuria?
As the lightweight title chase heats up, the anticipation surrounding potential matchups continues to grow. Oliveira is currently focused on his upcoming fights, hoping to establish himself as the number one contender once again. His experience and skills in the octagon will be put to the test as he prepares to face whichever challenger lies ahead.
Meanwhile, Topuria remains a dark horse in the division. His in-your-face approach may attract both fans and scrutiny. It remains to be seen how this dynamic unfolds and whether Topuria can translate his bold statements into performance inside the octagon.
Conclusion: A Division on the Brink
The lightweight division is undoubtedly one of the most thrilling and competitive segments of the UFC. With fighters like Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria navigating their respective journeys, the intrigue surrounding matchups is at an all-time high. As they both prepare for what lies ahead, one thing is certain: respect, rivalry, and relentless ambition will only elevate the stakes as they chase the ultimate goal—the lightweight championship.
As Oliveira continues to defend his legacy and Topuria strives to carve out his own path, fans can anticipate thrilling fights ahead, fueled by a blend of respect and rivalry that defines the spirit of mixed martial arts.
Charles Oliveira recently addressed comments made by Ilia Topuria, describing them as “very disrespectful.” The two fighters are in the midst of a heated competition for a shot at the lightweight title, with both expressing their aspirations and criticisms of each other. Topuria’s remarks have ignited further tension, fueling the anticipation for a potential matchup between the two in the future.
