The Unexpected Move: Paolo Guerrero Joins César Vallejo University
Last year, Peruvian politician and owner of César Vallejo University, César Acuña, aimed to shake up the national football scene by signing the legendary striker Paolo Guerrero. This move caught many by surprise, as most football analysts had predicted that the Predator would take his final bows with Lima Alliance. However, Guerrero relocated to Trujillo to embolden the UCV’s quest in League 1.
Despite the anticipation surrounding his arrival, Guerrero quickly harbored regrets about the decision. Several times, he voiced his concerns about security issues, especially regarding the safety of his family, which includes his mother, Petronila Gonzales, his girlfriend Ana Paula Consort, and his youngest son.

Leadership Battle: Guerrero’s Struggles and Departure
Although the club’s president, Richard Acuña, remained steadfast, refusing to let Guerrero leave, the seasoned striker ultimately found a route to exit the club through a sanctioned resignation by the Dispute Chamber of the Peruvian Football Federation. This marked a significant turning point for the UCV, which soon faced dire consequences.
Guerrero’s departure coincided with a turbulent phase for César Vallejo University, who suffered a painful relegation to the Second Division in Liga 1 2024. This fiasco highlighted the reality that financial investments, while important, cannot replace solid planning and a cohesive team.
As Acuña reflected on the club’s collapse, which included notable names like José Carvallo, Josepmir Ballón, and Yorleys Mena, he acknowledged the need for growth. “Our drop to Second stands as a stark message,” he stated on the Kick platform of Crystorata. “In 2024, we assembled a strong team. Paolo was one of the legendary captains, but winning isn’t just about star power; a true team is crucial.”

Lessons Learned: The Path Forward for César Vallejo University
César Acuña was disheartened by the abrupt decline of the César Vallejo University but noted a silver lining: “We fell to Second, but that’s a learning opportunity. You cannot become champions just because you sign stars. Strong leadership and team synergy are essential.”
The club’s current position in League 2 showcases their determination to rebound from setbacks. Acuña noted, “Now we are doing well, having progressed to the second stage. We hope next year to re-enter the professional realm. Our history contains moments of excellence; we just lack that elusive championship.”
César Vallejo University is entering a transformative phase as they embark on League 2 2025 after last season’s challenging relegation. The team is undergoing a thorough overhaul and restructuring, led by José Guillermo “Chemo” del Solar, who rejoined the club with a contract extending through 2027.
The revamped squad will feature key professionals, including seasoned striker Alexander Succar, Argentine midfielder Patricio Núñez, Ecuadorian winger Cortez Gardel, and defender Jefferson Portales, alongside forward Hideyoshi Arakaki. With a blend of youthful talent and vast experience, coupled with “Chemo’s” tactical acumen, UCV is set to reclaim their spot in the upper echelon of Peruvian football.
