Emergency Landing Due to Bomb Threat on Saudia Airlines Flight
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation in Indonesia has reported that an email bomb threat from an unidentified individual compelled a Saudia Airlines flight to divert its route and perform an emergency landing in Medan, on the island of Sumatra. The flight was carrying 442 passengers returning from the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia to Jakarta.
According to news agency AFP , the alert was received on the morning of the incident when the Indonesian airport operator notified authorities about the email containing a threat to “blow up” flight SV 5276 of Saudia Airlines. In response, the pilot opted not to continue to the Indonesian capital and instead chose to land in Medan, located in the western part of the country.
Upon landing, the passengers were evacuated from the aircraft in an orderly fashion , while a specialized bomb disposal unit commenced a thorough inspection of the plane, as outlined in the official statement from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation. The search operation focused on ensuring the safety of both passengers and crew members, as well as eliminating any risk prior to allowing access to the aircraft.
The incident occurred amid heightened sensitivities, as the passengers had just completed the Hajj, one of the most significant religious pilgrimages in the Muslim world.
Just days before, another bomb threat found in one of the aircraft’s lavatories forced an emergency landing of an Air India flight in Phuket, Thailand. According to German media outlet DW , flight AI 379 of Air India was carrying 156 passengers and 8 crew members , and departed from Phuket headed for the Indian capital.
As reported by DW , the pilot received a notification at 9:30 AM local time regarding a “bomb threat message” while the aircraft was in the air . Promptly, the Phuket airport activated its emergency protocol, as detailed in a statement released on its Facebook page.
The emergency plan included returning the aircraft to Phuket, where it was parked in a remote area of the airport away from regular operations. All passengers and crew were evacuated and relocated to a safe area, while specialized teams inspected both the aircraft compartments and the passengers’ luggage. Authorities reported, “No explosives or suspicious items were found during the inspections.”
Hours following the incident, the airport issued a second statement clarifying that the threat message was located in one of the airplane’s bathrooms . To date, authorities have not managed to identify the individual responsible for leaving the note. As noted by DW , the investigation remains ongoing, though no arrests or suspects have been reported.
