Barbie Embraces Artificial Intelligence: A New Era for Mattel

Thanks to the film featuring  Margot Robbie  (the highest-grossing film of 2023), Barbie is living a  second youth . While she has never completely fallen out of fashion, it is undeniable that the movie revitalized her message and infused it with a welcome layer of  modernity , giving it a fresh face. Now, Mattel is embracing  AI  to propel this and other iconic plastic figures to the forefront of the  21st century .

BarbIA. Mattel Inc., the creator of Barbie,  Hot Wheels ,  Polly Pocket , and a host of other globally popular toy franchises, has struck a deal with  OpenAI , as reported by Bloomberg. This partnership aims to assist in designing toys and, in some cases, incorporating artificial intelligence into their products. The collaboration is still in its early stages, providing exciting prospects for both companies.

Some Examples. Brad Lightcap,  Chief Operating Officer  of OpenAI, and Josh Silverman, head of franchises at Mattel, have shared exciting potential applications. They have proposed a few possibilities, such as creating digital companions based on Mattel characters or making classic games like  Uno  “more interactive.” They aim to reveal more details by the end of this year, following discussions that have reportedly been ongoing since late last year.

AI Accessible to Kids. This collaboration announcement has not been without controversy. While AI is increasingly being recognized as a valuable  educational tool , concerns are also growing over the irresponsible use of artificial intelligence in areas such as  social relationships  and  mental health . As these products may be accessible to children without supervision, Futurism recently discussed a  Stanford University study  highlighting the risks of allowing minors to be in the company of AI companions.

OpenAI Seeks Entertainment Opportunities. Mattel’s deal with OpenAI is part of a larger trend; OpenAI is eager to penetrate the entertainment sector. Recognizing that franchise opportunities are lucrative, the company has initiated meetings with major Hollywood studios. The goal is to introduce  Sora , their AI-based video generator, which can create hyper-realistic clips from textual descriptions. Sora provides filmmakers with enhanced control over parameters like lighting and weather, ultimately saving time and costs.

OpenAI’s Financial Needs. The moves made by OpenAI are not merely strategic; they stem from a critical necessity for liquidity. Although the company recently raised a record-breaking  $40 billion  in the largest private funding round ever, and its annual revenue is set to  double to $10 billion by 2025 , it still operates with significant losses, projected to be  $5 billion in 2024 . The high operational costs, particularly related to ChatGPT, contribute to this financial strain, with complex queries costing up to thousands of dollars each.

ChatGPT incurs substantial infrastructure and training costs, and profitability is not expected until at least  2029 . Competing global companies, particularly those from  China  like DeepSeek, further exacerbate OpenAI’s financial challenges, leaving little room to breathe.

ChatGPT is pushing some users to their limits.

AI and Entertainment. OpenAI is just one of many companies striving to carve a niche in various entertainment sectors. The introduction of AI technology into this realm is palpable, evident in how streaming platforms like  Netflix ,  YouTube , and  Spotify  utilize AI algorithms to analyze user preferences. Moreover, platforms such as Amper Music and  DALL-E  are generating content that rivals original works in terms of consumption.

In summary, the collaboration between Mattel and OpenAI marks a significant step forward, opening up a new chapter in the evolution of toys. As Barbie takes on new roles and modernizes her image, the ethical implications of AI in children’s products deserve careful consideration. Finding a balance between innovation and responsibility is vital for the future of both the toy industry and the children it serves.
