Cody “Clix” Conrad: The Rise of a Twitch Sensation

Cody “Clix” Conrad ranks  16th  on the list of Twitch streamers with the most followers. Within the  Top 10 , names like  Ibai Llanos ,  Auronplay , and  Rubius  dominate, primarily from the Spanish-speaking realm. In a recent broadcast, Clix received a call from a  15-year-old  on Discord named Lucas, who shockingly revealed that he had spent  $35,000  on donations in just one month. This shocking revelation culminated in the teenager being  banned  from the channel.

The Addictive Nature of Donations

Lucas admitted,  “It’s addictive.”  When pressed for clarification on why he was donating such high amounts, he explained that he earned  $18,000  from investing in stocks this year alone. His motivation? He described it as a way of ” spreading love ” and admitted feeling a  dopamine rush  whenever his name was mentioned on Clix’s stream. He essentially stated, “I just wanted to get your attention to add me on Fortnite, that’s all.”

The Consequences of Wealth

When asked about his family background, Lucas disclosed that his parents are in a  stable financial situation , effectively meaning they are wealthy. He did mention that he intended to stop donating on Twitch after his father discovered the extent of his spending and expressed his irritation. Lucas had been using his father’s credit card, as he was too young to have one of his own. Despite his father’s admonitions, the teenager continued to donate during the stream.

Clix’s Mixed Messages

Throughout the discussion, Clix offered  well-meaning advice  to Lucas, suggesting the money should be saved for more significant needs. Initially, Clix seemed poised to return some of Lucas’s donations, stating that he didn’t want to encourage refunds. However, he later asked Lucas to show him love through  additional donations , claiming that he would be sending more money his way. The call abruptly ended, and Lucas was removed from the channel without any refund. Following this, Clix resumed playing Fortnite and shifted his focus to soliciting subscriptions from older viewers.

The Addiction Epidemic

The issue of excessive donations on Twitch isn’t a new concern. Streams have highlighted rising trends of individuals becoming  addicted to donating .  Jen Herranz  initiated a conversation about the existence of real addiction-like behaviors surrounding donations, suggesting a form of modern  compulsive gambling . Following an eye-opening interview on  Jordi Évole ‘s channel, an anonymous mother detailed how her son, struggling with financial problems, stole his father’s card to spend  €600  on subscriptions.

Ibai’s Stance on the Issue

Ibai Llanos has publicly addressed this issue. He urged viewers to ” only subscribe to channels if you can afford it. ” He stressed that if individuals are stealing funds to donate, it should not occur. Time and again, he and his team have reached out to individuals who have excessively donated to ensure they are aware of what they are spending.

At 15 he won 400,000 euros in Fortnite tournaments and his mother took him out of school. This has been since then

Twitch’s Responsibility

Twitch’s own guidelines for parents and educators state that children under  13 years old  should not use the platform and provide measures aimed at preventing unsuitable content access. They acknowledge donations as common but do not adequately address the alarming trend of young users donating substantial amounts of money. This includes incidents like when a young teen donated  $11,000  to popular streamer  Kai Cenat , showcasing a trend that Twitch has struggled to manage effectively.

The company did update its  betting standards , but it failed to solve cases of teenagers becoming addicted to gaming-related content. While Twitch attracts millions of users and continues to grow, it is essential to address these challenges before they spiral out of control. The importance of parental guidance, monitoring of spending habits, and the streamers themselves taking responsibility cannot be overstated in these evolving scenarios.
