A  unique lighthouse  has recently emerged in  Marseille . In an inconspicuous street near the sea, a  stencil art piece  by the enigmatic street artist  Banksy  was discovered on  May 30, 2025 , after a prolonged period of silence from the artist.

The artwork depicts a dark  lighthouse  casting a bright  white light , accompanied by the phrase in English: “I want to be what you saw in me”. The artist, whose identity remains a mystery, shared a photograph of this creation on his Instagram profile without any additional commentary.

Although Banksy has produced both paintings and sculptures—one of which was sold for over  5 million euros  at auction in March—he is predominantly recognized for his  provocative stencils  found throughout the world’s streets, often creating public  hysteria .

“It’s Exciting”

“It’s fascinating that Banksy chose a city like  Marseille , which is rich in arts, diverse cultures, and vibrant life,” stated  Esteban Roldan , a 42-year-old carpenter living in  Marseille , who visited to see the artwork located in a narrow street close to the  Catalans beach , near downtown.

“It’s very surprising, and it’s exciting. It was nice to do a little research to discover the location where he made it. I’m happy to have found it,” explained  Susan McAllister , a 60-year-old engineering teacher.

“This could have multiple meanings: the interpretation depends on what you believe, how you see things, but it could relate to the image of Marseille,” added this British resident of Marseille, referring to the lighthouse—possibly a nod to this southern French port city.

Banksy’s artworks have garnered tens of millions of dollars, making him one of the most renowned living artists globally. His works often carry powerful and provocative messages on themes such as  war —as seen in  Ukraine in 2022 — capitalism ,  social control , and  human rights .
