In  Mexico , platforms such as  Amazon  have proven invaluable. With libraries and bookshops closed, readers turned to online shopping and digital books, allowing them to maintain their connection to literature. While nothing compares to physically browsing shelves in a library, Amazon has tailored offerings to cater to readers who know exactly what they want.

Despite the advantages of online platforms, the  reading population in Mexico  is facing challenges. Recent statistics reveal that only  68.5%  of the population engages in reading—an average of  3.4 books per year . This figure represents a decline, the lowest since the National Institute of Statistics and Geography ( INEGI ) began tracking reading habits in 2016.

The 2023 data indicates a decrease of  3.3 percentage points  in readership among those aged 18 and older compared to 2022. Since 2016, there has been a troubling shift, with readers declining by  12.3% . Males led the reading demographic this year with  71.7% , while females accounted for  65.7% . On average, individuals are spending  42 minutes  per continuous reading session.

The data also indicates that  reading habits decline with age . Among younger groups (18 to 34 years old), approximately  80%  read; however, this number diminishes significantly in older populations—only  50%  of those over 65 read regularly.

When examining  reading material , books comprised  40.8%  of what was read, followed by online content at  37.7% . Magazines, newspapers, and comics followed, indicating a preference for traditional print media among older populations.

Motivations for reading vary, with the majority (about  44.6% ) citing  entertainment  as the primary reason. Other motivations include reading for  work or studies  (26.5%),  cultural enrichment  (19.2%), and  religious reasons  (9.4%).

As we navigate the evolving landscape of literature in Mexico, it becomes clear that both digital platforms and traditional reading methods serve essential roles. It’s imperative to foster a culture of reading that engages all demographics and encourages exploration of both new and classic titles.
