Germany has confirmed the order for 20 H145M military helicopters from French designer Airbus. This contract, signed in 2023, elevates the total number of helicopters produced by France for Germany to an impressive 82 units.
## A Strategic Acquisition
On December 15, Germany officially announced the additional order for 20 H145M light combat helicopters. As part of the agreement made last year, Berlin had the foresight to include an option for more units, emphasizing their commitment to bolstering military capabilities. The fleet is set to be outfitted with tricolor devices starting in 2024.
Stefan Thomé, the general manager of Airbus Helicopters in Germany, remarked, “This renewed commitment from one of our home countries is a strong sign of confidence in the exceptional performance and multi-role capabilities of the H145M.” His statement reflects Airbus’s pride in delivering helicopters that meet high standards of performance and versatility.
## Versatility and Global Reach
The H145M is a military variant of the civilian H145, designed for various missions. This versatile helicopter can rapidly transition from a light attack configuration—equipped with guided weaponry and self-protection systems—to a special operations version featuring rapid commando descent equipment.
Globally, the H145M is already making its mark, serving multiple countries like Hungary, Serbia, Luxembourg, and Thailand. The U.S. Army operates nearly 500 H145 family helicopters under the designation UH-72 Lakota, further showcasing the helicopter’s reliability and adaptability.
### Recent International Contracts
In addition to the recent order by Germany, Airbus has secured additional agreements from Belgium for 17 aircraft, Brunei for six, and Ireland for four. This surge in international orders highlights the H145M’s growing reputation as a preferred choice for military operations.
## Advanced Features and Capabilities
The German military employs the H145M for specialized operations and search-and-rescue missions. It boasts two Safran Arriel 2E engines, renowned for their reliability and performance. The helicopter features a four-axis autopilot system, which not only manages altitude and direction but also assists with fore/aft and lateral tilt. This advanced technology significantly reduces the cognitive load on pilots, allowing them to focus on critical mission tasks.
## A Promising Future for Airbus Helicopters
Airbus Helicopters is currently experiencing a prosperous phase, bolstered by resumed deliveries and an increase in maintenance services. The brand enjoys a robust order book, heavily supported by military contracts both in Europe and on a global scale.
Germany’s latest acquisition of additional H145Ms is not just a testament to the helicopter’s capabilities but also a strategic move to enhance military readiness. As countries continually reassess their defense strategies, the H145M stands out as a flagship model, promising exceptional performance in a diverse range of missions.
