The Tragic Accident: A Community Mourns

On the night of July 1, Krystal Calvillo and her partner, Daniel Pérez, were cycling along a roadway when tragedy struck. An errant vehicle collided with Pérez, and in a heroic attempt to assist him, Calvillo was also struck by a second car whose driver subsequently fled the scene. The details of this incident were confirmed by the Harris County Sheriff Office (HCSO), which released a statement highlighting the unfortunate events that transpired.

Details of the Incident

According to the HCSO, the accident occurred in the 10200 block of Veterans Memorial Drive. Eyewitness accounts reveal a heartbreaking scenario: “They killed a mother who had two children who will now have to grow without a mother,” lamented Jeannette Calvillo, mourning the loss of her daughter, Krystal, in this devastating accident that occurred in northwest Harris County, Texas.

Reports from People detail that a 2020 Toyota RAV4 impacted Pérez in the southern lane. Krystal Calvillo, positioned on the western side of the road, witnessed the incident and rushed to help her injured boyfriend lying on the asphalt. Tragically, while she attempted to aid him, an unidentified vehicle struck both of them and then fled the scene. The couple was immediately transferred to a hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.

The driver of the Toyota remained on-site and cooperated with the authorities, while the HCSO’s vehicular crimes division continues to search for the driver responsible for the second collision. Authorities urge anyone with information regarding the fleeing driver to come forward.

A Heroic Act Recognized

In the face of overwhelming grief, Krystal Calvillo’s family recalls her as a courageous person. Her sister, Alexis, voiced to Khou, a CBS affiliate, the profound sentiment: “He died trying to help someone. So, as I told my nephews, he died like a hero. He literally sacrificed his life to try to help someone. That was Krystal. I had a big heart.”

Another sister, Nikki, emphasized the nature of Krystal’s heroism in a GoFundMe campaign for the family: “They snatched my sister tragically. Her boyfriend was hit by a car while riding his bike, and without thinking twice, she ran to help him, because that was how brave and loving she was. At that moment of courage and love, a second car ran over both… and then fled. My sister did not survive her injuries.”

In a collective effort, both families have initiated fundraising campaigns to address the rising funeral expenses after losing Calvillo and Pérez. Nikki highlighted the vital role her sister played as a mother, friend, and protector, mentioning that Krystal leaves behind two children: a 14-year-old teenager and a 12-year-old child who are now faced with life without their mother.

The family of Daniel Pérez has launched a similar fundraising effort. Heather Pérez, Daniel’s mother, has also called for anyone with information or videos of the incident to contact local authorities to aid in the ongoing investigation.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the selflessness that individuals can display even in the most perilous situations. Community members continue to mourn the loss of two promising lives, forever altered by this unforeseen tragedy.
