The incident unfolded in July 2023, when emergency services found the man unconscious on the streets of Brussels. Upon examination, they discovered 43,000 euros in cash tucked into his waistband. This discovery led the authorities to seize the money while they investigated its origins.
According to the man’s lawyer, this money constitutes his share of a family inheritance. He had previously withdrawn the sum from a bank due to mistrust in the financial system, opting instead to live a marginal existence reliant on organizations that assist homeless individuals.
Judicial Confirmation
After extensive judicial procedures lasting over a year, Belgian courts confirmed the legitimate origin of the money and approved its return. The funds were transferred to a bank account controlled by the family lawyer, who is now waiting for the homeless man to collect his due.
However, the issue remains that the man continuously avoids collecting his inheritance. “Whenever I manage to contact him, he assures me he will come the next day, but he never shows up,” his lawyer lamented. Consequently, since 2024, the money has been effectively locked until the man makes a formal acceptance or resignation.

This unique case is indicative of a broader trend, as Fednot reports that over 26,000 individuals filed free resignation requests before notaries in the first half of 2025. In comparison, the previous year saw 58,459 cases, a marked increase from 39,794 in 2019.
