The Timeless Majesty of Verdi’s Masterpiece at the Teatro Real

Actualizado

Two decades after its debut, the visionary staging by Willy Dekker of the opera of operas arrives at the Teatro Real. This monumental piece has maintained its remarkable excellence amidst the overall deterioration of operatic stagecraft, which is currently in deep crisis. Dekker’s genius lies in his ability to craft powerful theatrical images that embody a tragic conflict: a woman trapped in a  moral prison , facing emotional desolation and the looming specter of death, exacerbated by a  greedy nature , a cruel society, and the oppressive figures of the Germont family—father and son, with the son being a reckless victim of his cowardly father’s authority.

Nature has ravaged Violetta, inviting the relentless grip of tuberculosis before the advent of penicillin. Her ailment shows its initial signs early on, with a timely faint that sparks her first encounter with the young Alfredo, who is captivated by a mere fleeting glance and determined to pursue her. The moment arrives as he infiltrates a raucous party, to which he has not been invited. Among the bourgeois elite, his presence—an outsider—piques curiosity. This group, a tumultuous mass, acts as a single, drunken serpent, barely coherent, constantly escaping reality while observing from a distance the whims of Violetta, who has grown weary of their frivolity. She decides to embrace what she calls a  serious love , reciprocated by Alfredo as the second act unfolds. For once, he is not the solitary love-struck admirer recounting his joy in their villa; instead, he celebrates with her in a playful duet, capturing the ephemeral illusion of happiness.

Violetta (Nadine Sierra), Alfredo (Xabier Anduaga), and Germont (Luca Sala) navigate their brief yet poignant story in the expanse of a no-man’s land, presided over by a grand clock—an ominous reminder of diminishing time—with the subtle yet fearsome presence of Dr. Grenvil (Giacomo Prestia), the physician who does not heal, heralding the endpoint of existence. The cast delivers vigorous performances under the  pulsating direction  of Henrik Náriási. For each of the 18 scheduled performances, alternate cast members bring fresh interpretations, emphasizing that a production encompasses not only a cohesive aesthetic vision but also the nuanced direction of actors. Each performer inevitably influences the portrayal of their character: Violetta may come across as more sensual or despondent, Alfredo may exhibit varying degrees of drive, while Germont might embody the hypocrisy of a petty bourgeois or a crude parvenu demanding respect, steadfast in the  reactionary convention  that forbids his daughter from marrying if her brother continues a relationship with a “traviata.”

Despite its accessibility and familiarity, this production at the Teatro Real propels the audience into a state of astonishment, awakening the senses to the inexhaustible talents of Verdi and the opera itself. This theatrical and musical genre continually renews itself, sustained by artists whose commitment is heroic, daring to enact what must be done.
