– Absolutely enormous. It would have been quite normal to have a slight dip in form after last year’s wild season, but he has taken it to new heights instead. That’s what news’s football expert Kristoffer Løkberg says about the form of Swedish super striker Viktor Gyökeres. The 26-year-old scored a hat trick as Sporting CP beat Manchester City 4-1 in the Champions League on Tuesday evening. Thus, the forward stands with five goals in four games in the tournament this season. In addition, he has 16 goals in ten matches in the Portuguese league, while last year he scored a total of 29 goals when Sporting became league champions. Colleague Erling Braut Haaland had a tougher day at work. Penalties and missing chances were on the menu for the Norwegian, who ended up in the shadow of his Swedish striker colleague. Chance loss by Haaland Because it was not about the chances for Haaland. It was the visitors who started best in Lisbon. It only took four minutes before Phil Foden sent the away team into the lead. The Englishman grabbed the ball from Sporting’s midfielder Hidemasa Morita and squeezed in from 16 metres, past goalkeeper Franco Israel. Gyökeres came alone with the goalkeeper only minutes later, without outwitting Ederson in the City goal. Instead, it was Haaland who had the most chances in the first half hour with four finishes. Unlike the Jærbow, none of them finished in the finish line. FRIENDLY TONE: Erling Braut Haaland and Viktor Gyökeres before Tuesday’s match. Thus it was 1-1 at half-time in Lisbon. It only took 20 seconds of the second half before the home team went up 2-1. A fantastic attack straight from the kick-off was finished off by Maximiliano Araujo. Just two minutes later, referee Daniel Siebert pointed to the penalty spot after Josko Gvardiol pushed Francisco Trincão over the edge in the penalty area. This allowed Gyökeres to score his second of the evening. At 3-1 and with just over 20 minutes remaining, City also received a penalty. Bernardo Silva shot the ball into Ousmane Diomande’s hand and the referee awarded a penalty after a VAR check. But Haaland missed, and the trickster had to realize that Sporting received their second penalty of the day after substitute Geny Catamo dribbled into the penalty area, and was ripped in the arm by Matheus Nunes. Again, Gyökeres was safe from the penalty spot and scored 4-1 to the Portuguese league leader. Big for the future United manager The victory probably tasted extra good for Sporting coach Ruben Amorim. The 39-year-old takes over as head coach of Manchester United on 11 November. So this win over Pep Guardiola’s men is sure to be appreciated in the red part of Manchester. SUCCESS COACH: Ruben Amorim has won two league golds in Sporting CP. Now the trip to Manchester United goes immediately for the popular Portuguese. Photo: Reuters Løkberg believes the Portuguese wants to bring some of the players who have helped create the enormous success in Sporting CP since he took over in 2020: – Amorim is lying if he says he does not intend to try to bring Gyökeres joined United, but all teams that are looking for a classic number nine probably have the same man at the top of the list, so it will probably not be without competition. The last time these teams met at the Jose Alvalade Stadium in Lisbon, Sporting lost 5-0. That back in the 2022/23 season. This probably tastes extra good for Amorim and his boys. Sporting has ten out of ten possible victories at the top of the table in Portugal, and is currently in 2nd place in the Champions League with 10 points after four games played. This means that they advance and are comfortably among the eight best who go directly to a round of 16. City are currently 6th in the Champions League with seven points.
