The investigation shows that double-decker trains are the best option for increased capacity and comfort in the trains. The Norwegian Railway Directorate writes this in a press release on Monday morning. The investigation was carried out on behalf of the Ministry of Transport, and on Monday 18 September the Directorate of Railways handed over its recommendation to the ministry. Department director in the Directorate of Railways, Jan Frederik Geiner, says that after considering several different options, they recommend purchasing double-decker trains that can be put into service in 2030. The Directorate of Railways has calculated that it will cost NOK 8.5 billion to introduce two double-decker train in Eastern Norway. In addition, it is estimated that the cost of improving the infrastructure is around 600 million, in addition to the costs of additional storage spaces for the trains.
