– I am very surprised and proud, says Gomez to news. It’s no wonder the 16-year-old is proud. After a competition at the weekend, she can boast a new Norwegian record. PROUD: Gomez has achieved great things at a young age. Photo: Gunvor Bay – I came to the competition not having very high expectations. It was tough competition, but then I did a very good card program that was flawless. It was a Norwegian record, and then I was in first place after everyone had finished, says Gomez. – I was quite shocked. I didn’t think I would do so well, she adds. Watch Gomez impress in the short program: – Didn’t think about the WC requirement But Gomez can also enjoy more than one record. Namely three records. In addition to the short program, she also set a new record in freestyle and overall in the tournament. With victory in the short program and second best result in the long program, it was also a victory in the tournament overall for Gomez. At the same time, she met the WC requirement, and thus has the opportunity to be selected for the WC in Japan. SURPRISED: Gomez’s victory in the short program set a record. Photo: Gunvor Bay – Did you think you would manage the Norwegian record and the WC requirement already this season? – At least not at the start of the season. I didn’t think about the WC requirement at all, I rather thought about the EC requirement, she says. But now that the claim is in the box, she hopes that it will be her turn to both Japan and the EC in Finland. – More long-term, I am betting on the Olympics in 2026 in Italy. That is the big dream. – Is the goal then to participate, or to be able to assert oneself at the top? – Just participating would have been a lot of fun. Figure skating is pretty tough overseas, so joining the Olympics would have been great fun in itself and being able to enjoy the experience. – A feat for the history books Although she is a recent senior, the 16-year-old has already been involved in figure skating for many years. Gomez started when she was around eight or nine years old. – It is the result of long-term and dedicated investment. It is admirable that she manages to keep a cool head and manage the points requirement in her first season as a senior, says president of the Norwegian Skating Association, Mona Adolfsen, to news. IMPRESSED: The president of the Norwegian Skating Association pays tribute to Gomez. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB scanpix She pays tribute to the performance of the recent Norwegian record holder and is supported by figure skating judge Kari-Anne Olsen. – It is a feat for the history books. It is not often that we have runners who manage to qualify at such a young age, says Olsen to news. – It is fantastic for Norwegian figure skating that we get a runner who has passed the WC requirement. It is funny with the progress she has had in the last year, continues the judge. Previously, only Anne Line Gjersem and Kaja Hanevold of Norway have managed to qualify for a figure skating WC. After the International Skating Federation introduced point requirements seven years ago, only Gjersem has managed it. SENIOR: This year’s season is Gomez’s first as a senior. Photo: Trine Nessler Wichmann Olsen, who also sits on the selection committee for the WC, points out that the 16-year-old has still not been selected for the championship. She nevertheless emphasizes that it is only a formality that remains. – An injury or something like that could occur. Then there may also be more people who manage it – we only have one place. Then it’s about the highest technical score, she says.
