Louis van Gaal Bids Farewell to Ajax Amsterdam
Ajax Amsterdam officially announced the departure of Louis van Gaal, the club’s esteemed advisor, marking the end of his tenure that began in October 2023. At 74 years of age, Van Gaal feels that his mission is now complete, having played a significant role in Ajax’s journey during a challenging period for the club.
A Mission Accomplished
In a heartfelt statement, Van Gaal reflected on his time at Ajax, stating, “Michael van Praag is a friend and we worked very well together at Ajax in the past. (…) There were a lot of position changes and too little football knowledge during this period. As an external advisor, I was then able to play a role in appointing people to key positions, such as Alex Kroes and Marijn Beuker. (…) But Michael left in 2025, Alex left and Marijn also left the club. So the time has come for me to stop.”
This departure comes after Van Gaal was called upon to assist in the club’s sporting reconstruction, a necessary move after a particularly turbulent period for Ajax. His influence was felt as he helped bring in key figures to stabilize the club’s direction.
Context of the Departure
Van Gaal’s advisory role within the Supervisory Board of Ajax involved navigating complex football-related issues. His insights were crucial during a transformative phase, and it’s clear that he believed in the potential of the club to rebound from its recent difficulties. With key personnel changes now complete, he deems it time for a new approach, allowing fresh ideas to flourish without his seasoned presence.
A Legacy in Dutch Football
Louis van Gaal is not just a name; he is a prominent figure in the world of football and, in particular, at Ajax. His illustrious career began as an assistant coach at Ajax from 1988 to 1991, then elevated to head coach from 1991 to 1997. Under his guidance, Ajax won the UEFA Champions League in 1995, a pinnacle achievement that would pave the way for a global career.
He went on to coach some of the biggest clubs in football, including FC Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United, solidifying his reputation as a tactician par excellence. Van Gaal’s most recent coaching role was with the Netherlands national team, where he led the squad during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Looking Ahead
As Ajax moves forward, they will undoubtedly feel Van Gaal’s absence. His contributions were not only limited to key appointments but also included valuable institutional knowledge, earned over decades of experience at the top levels of football. His departure signals a new era for Ajax, one that the club hopes will bring renewed vigor and success.
Louis van Gaal’s departure marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to resonate within the hearts of Ajax supporters and the broader football community. As the club navigates its next steps, the foundation he helped build during his advisory role will remain crucial to their aspirations for future glory.
