Iran National Team’s Farewell to the 2026 World Cup
The Iran national team bid farewell to the 2026 World Cup with heartfelt gratitude directed toward their hosts in Mexico and the city of Tijuana. After enduring travel restrictions affecting their gameplay in the USA, the Iranian team spent 20 days in Tijuana, ultimately finishing third in Group G and missing out on the knockout stage.
Support from the Mexican Fans
During their stay, the Iranian players expressed deep appreciation for the Mexican fans. In recorded messages on social media, the team highlighted the hospitality and support they received amid challenging circumstances marked by political strains and travel complications. Their elimination was bittersweet, determined in the last minutes of the tournament after a tie between Algeria and Australia crushed their hopes for advancement.
During the World Cup, Iran faced tough opponents, drawing matches against Belgium (0-0), New Zealand (2-2), and Egypt (1-1), closing with three points in their group.
A Message of Gratitude
In their farewell messages, the Iranian delegation thanked the local fans, stating, “We thank you so much for the love you gave us. We suffered many injustices from your northern neighbors, but we have felt accompanied by you. Our country is also your second home, and the doors are open for you because we love you very much.” They emphasized that relationships built during this tournament could pave the way for future ties between Iran and Mexico.
Challenges Faced
Iran’s tournament experience was fraught with challenges. The US authorities’ travel restrictions forced the team to return to Mexico after matches, complicating their logistics. The Iranian squad initially arrived in Tijuana on June 7, using the local Caliente Stadium for training. Their extended stay was a necessity due to political tensions and visa denials for support staff.
The Iranian ambassador to Mexico, Abolfazl Pasandideh, thanked the fans for their warm welcome, stating, “Our team is going to leave Tijuana with very good memories of all of you.”
Future Relationships
Despite the disappointing exit from the tournament, the Iranian Football Federation’s general secretary, Hedayat Mombeni, noted that their time in Tijuana left a lasting impression. “This World Cup for us will be historic in Iran,” he remarked, expressing hope for future bilateral sports relations between Iran and Mexico.
As the Iranian delegation prepares to depart, their experience in Tijuana serves as a testament to the unifying power of sport, even in the face of adversity.
