The solar eclipse on August 12 is shaping up to be a major draw for tourists seeking unique destinations. Unlike other renowned tourist spots in Spain, such as Benidorm and the Canary Islands, the path of totality predominantly crosses through lesser-known areas. Notably,  the splendor of the eclipse will illuminate small towns in the so-called emptied Spain . One such destination is Puertomingalvo, a captivating village in Teruel, where accommodations have been fully booked for over a year.

The Enigmatic Charm of Puertomingalvo

Located in the  Gúdar Javalambre region , Puertomingalvo boasts a population of about 130 residents, which swells to around 600 during the summer months. Many visit their second homes, while the village’s 11 accommodations have already filled up for the eclipse period. Manuel Vázquez, the local tourism guide, notes that this early surge in bookings was unusual, as reservations typically start in June.

Interestingly, searches for Puertomingalvo have shifted from primarily French to Spanish, indicating a rise in national tourism. Thanks to the eclipse, more Spaniards are now exploring this hidden gem.

Preparing for the Visitor Influx

The Government of Aragon has actively prepared Puertomingalvo and surrounding areas for the eclipse. Vázquez mentions that they provide necessary information, including how to use protective glasses and safety tips to prevent fires. Positioned at  1,456 meters above sea level , the town enjoys an exceptionally clear sky, making it an ideal location for eclipse viewing.

Activities Beyond the Eclipse

Puertomingalvo offers more than just a view of the solar eclipse. The town has a bustling summer festival calendar, with over  100 activities planned for August alone . Visitors can explore its medieval walls and rich heritage, as it is recognized as one of Spain’s most beautiful towns and was declared a Historical-Artistic Complex in 1982.

Key attractions include the well-preserved  Castle , Town Hall, and various hermitages, showcasing a blend of  Civil Gothic architecture  from the 14th to 16th centuries. The Church of the Purification and San Blas, the former Hospital for the Poor (now a hostel), and Casa Llorens—a palatial house—are must-see sites.

Nature and Adventure Activities

Surrounded by stunning landscapes, Puertomingalvo is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Numerous  hiking trails  cater to different preferences, whether by foot, bicycle, or horseback. One popular route is the  Cascada del Arquero , perfect for a refreshing swim after a day of hiking.

Additionally, history buffs can explore the ruins of the  Iberian town of Los Castillejos , offering a glimpse into ancient civilizations.

A Unique Vacation Destination

In conclusion, Puertomingalvo promises a rich tapestry of history, nature, and celestial wonders. Whether you’re there for the eclipse or to immerse yourself in its cultural offerings, this quaint village provides a fitful escape from the everyday.
