Installation of Peace Building Coordination in Chilapa

The Secretary of the Interior launched the coordination for Peace Building on May 22 in Chilapa, Guerrero. This initiative comes in response to alarming violence, with the Indigenous and Popular Council of Guerrero-Emiliano Zapata (CIPOG-EZ) reporting 76 murders and 25 missing individuals due to ongoing attacks led by the criminal group “The Ardillos” in the Low Mountain region.

Commitment to the Community

This initiative was part of the promises made by Secretary Rosa Icela Rodríguez to the affected families during a tour of the region. Additionally, authorities appointed ten new municipal commissioners from various localities including Acahuehuetlán and Mexcaltepec. These commissioners will serve as vital links between their communities and the government, facilitating effective communication and action.

Federal Officials Attend the Meeting

Undersecretary Cesar Yanez, following directives from President Claudia Sheinbaum, emphasized the importance of maintaining open dialogue with the communities in the Chilapa-Hueycantenango corridor. The meeting also included various governmental representatives dedicated to addressing the ongoing violence, showcasing a collective effort towards peace and reconstruction.

Increasing Violence in the Area

Reports indicate that the regional violence stems from ongoing conflicts between criminal factions, particularly “The Ardillos” and “The Tlacos.” Just days before the peace table’s installation, incidents of drone attacks and high-caliber weapon fire were documented, contributing to mass displacements in communities like Tula and Acahuehuetlán.

Community Sentiment and Recognition of Displacement

At a morning conference just before the meeting, President Sheinbaum acknowledged the displacement of families without providing immediate actions. The prevalent sentiment within the communities reflects a deep sense of abandonment as they face escalating violence. The CIPOG-EZ highlighted a lack of military presence during critical assaults, raising concerns about community security.

Moving Forward: A Call for Unity

Despite the grim circumstances, the newly established dialogue aims to foster agreements that will contribute to rebuilding the social fabric of the region. Continuous engagement between local and federal authorities is crucial to ensure that community voices are heard and addressed.

The Role of Law Enforcement

Participation from law enforcement agencies, including the IX Military Region and the National Guard, underscores a commitment to restore order and security. These efforts are essential to providing reassurance to terrified residents and facilitating the essential rebuilding of trust within communities.

In conclusion, the federal government’s establishment of the peace-building table in Chilapa represents a proactive step toward addressing long-standing violence. With commitment and unity, there is potential for meaningful change in Guerrero’s vulnerable communities. Effective collaboration among various stakeholders is necessary to ensure the safety, security, and well-being of all residents.
