## Aragón: A New Hub for Data Centers
Aragón, often referred to as one of Spain’s renewable energy powerhouses, has caught the attention of major tech companies looking to expand their operations in Europe. Amazon, in particular, has its sights set on the region, motivated by a clear goal: the establishment of more data centers.
### Expanding on Previous Ventures
Amazon Web Services (AWS) has been active in Aragón since November 2022, managing data centers in Zaragoza and Huesca. As interest in data centers has surged, Amazon has been diligently pursuing permits to expand its operations. Recently, the Government Council’s approval has unblocked the path for these plans, enabling construction to commence.
### From Vision to Reality: The General Interest Plan
The development plan falls under the General Interest Plan of Aragón (PIGA), which aims for AWS to occupy approximately 800 hectares with around thirty data centers, ten electrical substations, and twelve ancillary buildings. This initiative is well underway alongside other parallel projects in Walqa, San Mateo de Gállego, and La Puebla de Híjar.
### Economic Impact: Job Creation and Investments
During the recent Mobile World Congress, Amazon revealed its ambitious investment plans, totaling €33.7 billion in Spain. This includes substantial investment in Aragón’s data infrastructure from 2026 to 2035, with estimates suggesting an overall economic boost of €31.7 billion to Spain’s GDP.
For Aragón specifically, this operation is anticipated to inject €18.5 billion into the regional economy, potentially providing 13,400 local jobs through direct, indirect, and induced employment.
### Energy Consumption Concerns
Despite Aragón’s significant renewable energy resources, a vital question arises: can the region meet the immense energy demands of these data centers? Scaling AWS operations is projected to add over 10,800 GWh per year, exceeding the current electricity consumption of Aragón. The potential reliance on alternative energy sources, including gas and coal, raises significant concerns among local stakeholders.
### Environmental Considerations
Local industry voices caution about the environmental impact, especially regarding water consumption and energy resources. Critics argue that focusing resources on AWS and green hydrogen initiatives could inhibit the development of more traditional renewable energy sources.
Environmental groups have begun expressing their discontent, particularly in municipalities resistant to having data centers nearby, leading to protests against Amazon’s construction in protected lands.
### The Bigger Picture: A Tech Landscape Transforming
While AWS is a leading example of digital growth in the area, it isn’t alone. The broader vision for Aragón positions it as a central hub for digital infrastructure in Europe, thereby strengthening technological sovereignty on the continent.
As Aragón transforms into a vital region for data centers, balancing the economic gains with environmental sustainability and local community welfare will be a critical focus moving forward.
