Voting Extension in Lima: Key Details
The National Election Jury (JNE) has officially confirmed an extension of voting hours at several schools in Lima Sur and San Juan de Miraflores. The decision came as a response to delays in the arrival of electoral materials, which hindered the timely installation of polling stations on the scheduled election day, April 12, 2026. This move is aimed at ensuring that all citizens affected by this delay can still exercise their democratic right to vote.
Schools Affected by Installation Delays
Classes at these educational institutions have been suspended until Monday, April 13, to facilitate the extended voting. Notably, the JNE has released a list of schools where voting tables could not be set up:
- Virgin of the Assumption Parish Institution
- School 6041 Alfonso Ugarte
- Educational Institution 6151 San Luis Gonzaga
- Educational Institution 7078 Virgen del Chapi

New Voting Hours and Logistics
The JNE has announced that on Monday, April 13, voters affected by this delay will have the opportunity to vote from 7 AM to 6 PM. This extended schedule is in alignment with a request from the Ombudsman’s Office for urgent measures to address logistical challenges that surfaced during the election.
Furthermore, the extension also applies to voters in two U.S. constituencies—Orlando (Florida) and Patterson (New Jersey)—where similar issues arose.
Reasons for the Voting Extension
The decision to extend the voting period stemmed from significant delays in the distribution and delivery of electoral materials. Poor logistics attributed to transport company inefficiencies—specifically, the absence of suitable trucks—left over 63,000 voters unable to fulfill their voting duties on the designated day.
This extraordinary measure ensures that no citizen is disenfranchised and emphasizes the importance of facilitating democratic participation amid unforeseen circumstances.
