There are few things that can surprise you when you fly at 10,000 meters high in the middle of the ocean. The problem (the big problem) is that when something surprises you in that context, it is not usually a pleasant surprise.
And much less if what surprises you is a rat.
Can you imagine the feeling? We assume that something similar is what the 250 passengers on a KLM plane flying from Amsterdam to Aruba experienced. The flight was interrupted after the stowaway was discovered, forcing the passengers to wait one more night until a replacement plane was arranged.
A Rat at 10,000 Meters High
By the time the plane was approaching Aruba, all passengers were aware of the situation. Amid dreams of paradisiacal beaches and relaxation, the image of a rat invaded their thoughts.
Specifically, the rat was captured in videos recorded by the passengers, scurrying between the curtains that separate the seating categories or darting in and out of overhead compartments. The images were widely shared in Dutch media sources such as Telegraaf.
Fortunately, Dutch media reported that passengers remained calm during the ordeal, and the flight crew kept a close watch on the rat. As detailed by RTL, it took KLM 36 hours to capture the stowaway after its initial sighting.
Cancellation and Cleaning Protocols
After catching the rat, KLM found themselves needing to cancel the return flight due to necessary cleaning and disinfection protocols. More than 250 passengers were left on the ground to ensure a thorough sanitation of the aircraft interior.

Compensation Options
Inquiries have arisen regarding whether passengers can seek compensation for this extraordinary situation. Experts cited by Telegraaf explained that pursuing compensation might be complicated. Passengers would need to demonstrate that the airline was culpable for the rat’s presence.
In theory, they could request monetary compensation if investigations determine that the rat entered through compartments related to food catering, though proving this might be challenging.
As the aviation industry continues to grapple with various challenges, it raises an unforgettable question: how safe is our travel experience, and what unexpected hurdles might we encounter en route to our dream destinations?
