The Call to Action: “Let’s Add Hands”
International Volunteer Day sees the Buenos Aires Food Bank launching the campaign “Let’s add hands,” inviting individuals to contribute their time and effort in the fight against hunger. This initiative addresses those in need across the metropolitan area, emphasizing the significant impact that each volunteer can have.
The Importance of Volunteer Efforts
Every act of volunteering serves a greater purpose. For instance, approximately 360,000 individuals receive nourishment daily through 1,280 dining rooms and picnic areas in Buenos Aires. The Food Bank is not merely a food distribution center; it is a hub of community support, creating genuine connections through collaborative efforts.
Volunteering: More Than Just a Duty
Over the past year, a remarkable 5,263 volunteers contributed a staggering 22,112 hours of service. Their roles include food classification, quality control, and awareness campaigns. Additionally, volunteers help organize events and carry out essential administrative tasks at the Benavídez Distribution Center.
Ways to Get Involved
Those interested in volunteering can choose from several options:
- Individual Volunteering: Engage on a permanent or occasional basis.
- Corporate Volunteering: Employees of companies participating in social responsibility programs.
- School Volunteering: Students participate in organized volunteer days to foster empathy and social awareness.
Volunteers primarily focus on the meticulous classification and quality assessment of food donations to ensure optimal conditions before reaching dining rooms.
Convenient Participation Mechanics
Shifts are conveniently scheduled from Monday to Thursday in two slots: 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM, with Friday shifts concluding at 3:30 PM. All volunteering occurs at the Chilavert 275 logistics center in Benavídez. Those interested can apply by emailing [email protected] with no specific requirements other than a willingness to work collectively for a meaningful cause.
The Impact of Volunteering
Volunteers often describe their experience as an opportunity to give back to the community and find purpose after significant life changes such as retirement or unemployment. The Food Bank fosters intergenerational relationships, welcoming families and individuals of various ages into its community.
A Message from Leadership
Fernando Uranga, General Director of the Food Bank, emphasizes the silent yet profound impact of volunteerism. He notes the collective effort of corporate volunteers, individuals, and partners helping to serve over 360,000 people across multiple dining rooms in Buenos Aires. This vital work ensures meals reach those in need promptly.
Join the Movement
The Buenos Aires Food Bank defines its role as a bridge between those facing hunger and those willing to help, upholding the philosophy of “Less Hunger, More Future.” Volunteering is not merely an act of charity; it’s crucial for the continuity and growth of this solidarity mission, particularly as social needs increase.
The “Let’s add hands” campaign emphasizes that community involvement is essential in addressing the pressing issue of hunger. The Buenos Aires Food Bank urges everyone—citizens, institutions, organizations, and businesses—to unite in this noble cause.
This year, as we observe International Volunteer Day, the Food Bank reaffirms its commitment to building a more equitable society, reducing hunger, and creating a brighter future for all.
