The founder of Valve, Gabe Newell, is not only a titan in the video game industry but also has a profound passion for sailing. His recent endeavor is nothing short of spectacular; he has launched a superyacht valued at over $500 million, and to further entwine his interests, he has even purchased the company that manufactured it.

Newell, whose net worth is estimated at around $11 billion, is among the most active millionaires in the superyacht community. His flotilla boasts several vessels, some of which are utilized for marine research under the organization “ink fish.”

Newell’s New Yacht: The Leviathan

Newell’s latest acquisition, internally coded Y722, has officially been named Leviathan. This stunning 111-meter yacht represents a close partnership with the Dutch shipyard Oceanco, and Newell’s hands-on involvement has culminated in him owning a substantial share of the shipyard.

As one of the most advanced and expensive superyachts globally, Leviathan was crafted with an innovative approach. According to Deniz de Koningh, Oceanco’s project manager, nothing about this yacht is traditional. Its design incorporates cutting-edge technology and a commitment to sustainability.

One of the yacht’s standout features is its hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system. With a powerful 5.5 megawatt-hour battery onboard, Leviathan can operate quietly at night, effectively reducing emissions and enhancing the environmental credentials of the vessel. Other advanced systems include wastewater treatment technologies and waste heat recovery to further mitigate its environmental footprint.

Innovative Materials and Easy Maintenance

The design of the yacht also reflects a move away from traditional materials. Modern composites have replaced teak wood decking, significantly reducing the maintenance required. Even the paint on the hull has been formulated for easy cleaning and care, emphasizing Newell’s desire for innovative solutions.

Onboard Amenities: A Gaming Haven at Sea

Newell envisioned Leviathan as a space for collaboration, leading to an impressive main lounge equipped to accommodate communal dining for up to 54 people. This capacity aligns perfectly with the yacht’s arrangement of 26 guest accommodations and 37 crew members, ensuring a vibrant atmosphere onboard.

Not surprisingly, gaming facilities are among the yacht’s top attractions. In addition to a basketball court and a spa with a jacuzzi, one deck features a dedicated gaming room complete with 15 PC gaming stations and two racing simulators. For Newell, the high seas provide the perfect setting for a LAN party!

Diving and Research Facilities

Newell’s love for adventure extends to diving, as highlighted in a recent interview where he mentioned his diving passion. The yacht includes a submarine hangar and a diving center, along with a fully equipped laboratory for marine research. This makes Leviathan not just a luxury vessel but also a potential asset for research expeditions.

3D Printing and Medical Support

A key feature of the yacht is a 3D printing workshop, enabling the creation of spare parts right at sea to support Newell’s research fleet. In addition, the yacht boasts a fully equipped hospital, complete with a resident nurse, ensuring that safety comes first during any adventure.

As Newell stated, collaborating with the Oceanco team has been a joy. They embraced his unconventional requests, demonstrating a shared vision for pushing the boundaries of yacht design. As Leviathan embarks on its maiden voyages, the combination of luxury, technology, and environmental responsibility sets a new standard for superyachts in the 21st century.
