Giorgio Armani: A Legacy of Elegance and Innovation
The death of Giorgio Armani on Thursday, September 4, at the age of 91, in his residence in Milan, has marked a significant milestone for the global fashion industry. Renowned for the refinement of his designs and his unmistakable personal style, Armani left an indelible mark on the fashion world, revolutionizing international aesthetic codes and ensuring the continuity of his legacy.
Armani’s remarkable business acumen built an estimated fortune between €11 billion and €13 billion, creating a complex succession network to safeguard his brand’s independence and longevity. His company, Giorgio Armani Spa, encompasses twelve production plants and approximately 2,700 boutiques across 60 countries, diversifying into areas such as accessories, perfumes, makeup, and even owning the Olimpia Milano basketball club.

According to Forbes, Armani’s fortune reached $12.1 billion, while other financial estimates suggest it could be around $15 billion. Despite a challenging year for the industry, with profits falling 6% compared to 2023, the group still managed to maintain strategic investments, such as the renovation of the iconic Madison Avenue store in New York and the expansion of the Armani Milano Emporio.
Armani was meticulous in planning his succession. In various interviews with Financial Times and Corriere della Sera, he expressed his desire for a smooth transition of responsibilities to avoid crises. His vision included a gradual handover to his closest collaborators, including Leo Dell’orco, who had been a key figure in the company and his partner for over twenty years.
Dell’orco, as the director of the Male Style Office, became a prominent candidate for succession, but Armani emphasized the need for a collective approach, integrating his close collaborators and family members, specifically his nieces, Silvana and Roberta, daughters of his late brother Sergio.
Additionally, his nephew Andrea Camerana, son of his sister Rosanna, also emerges as a potential successor. Together, this close-knit circle of family and trusted associates is prepared to uphold the legacy that Armani envisioned.
In his autobiography “Per Amore,” published in 2022, Armani acknowledged the importance of continuity. He remarked, “One day I will have to give control and conclude my career as a designer… I want the fruit of so much work… to last for a long time, even without me.”
The establishment of the Giorgio Armani Foundation in 2016 reiterates the designer’s commitment to protecting the integrity of his brand. Although it held only a small stake at the time of his passing, the foundation’s influence is significant in ensuring that the Armani brand remains true to its roots, preventing it from being sold or diluted.

The testament showcases the desire to ensure that the transition does not create divisions or vulnerabilities within the firm he founded in 1975. Armani’s commitment to a coherent brand identity is evident in his declaration that, “We must maintain coherence in terms of style, image, product, and communication, so that the global development of the name Armani remains in time.”
Giorgio Armani leaves behind a legacy of aesthetic innovation, business acumen, and strategic vision. His fortune and the indelible mark he made on the luxury fashion industry exemplify how a visionary can build and protect a family empire in the fiercely competitive European market. His postmortem guidelines serve as a testament to a meticulously crafted life, illustrated through the tailored cuts of his designs and the future of a brand that will continue to reflect his vision for years to come.
