Luis Merlo Shines in ‘A Wild God’: A New Theatrical Masterpiece

This summer,  Luis Merlo  has foregone vacation plans to dedicate his time to a remarkable new theatrical venture,  ‘A Wild God’ , penned by acclaimed French playwright  Yasmina Reza . Premiering at the  Alcázar Theater  in Madrid, this production, directed by  Tamzin Towsend , features an impressive cast, including  Natalia Millán ,  Clara Sanchis , and  Juanan Lumbreras . The play is poised to become one of the top highlights of the theater season in Madrid.

Luis, the son of renowned performers  María Luisa Merlo  and  Carlos Larrañaga , expressed his enthusiasm for this project, which marks a  new adaptation  of one of contemporary theater’s most celebrated works. Drawing on previous productions, including those featuring  Maribel Verdú  and  Aitana Sánchez-Gijón , this adaptation aims to deliver a fresh perspective on Reza’s pivotal text.

The narrative unfolds at a parents’ meeting sparked by a typical children’s fight, escalating into a  drama  that illustrates deeper themes. “The parents end up facing consequences they never anticipated,” Luis explains, emphasizing the  wild nature  of familial relationships embodied in this piece.

Reflecting on his past, Luis shared how his lineage as a son of renowned actors often set him apart during his childhood. “Growing up as a child of actors in the year 1966 posed significant challenges,” he reminisces. “In a  repressive  environment influenced by Franco’s regime, our family faced considerable scrutiny and attacks.” Recognizing the difficulties of being in the public eye, he recalls the bullying he endured during formative years, which is a memory laden with  emotion  for him.

Currently, Merlo describes the experience of working in ‘A Wild God’ as  beautiful . “Tamzin Towsend is an extraordinary director — this is the fourth project we’ve collaborated on. My co-stars and I have a history together that enriches our performance,” he shared. Their camaraderie has only strengthened over time, making the endeavor more enjoyable.

In addition to ‘A Wild God’, Merlo’s career continues to thrive on multiple fronts. He excitedly revealed that he has completed filming the last season of the popular show  ‘The one that is coming’ , with another season already in the  pipeline . His commitment to theater remains unwavering: “It’s theater, theater, and more theater for me,” he asserts.

While both television and theater have their merits, Merlo acknowledges that “theater holds a unique magic.” The atmosphere generated by live audiences — filled with laughter and applause — elevates the experience to a different realm. “Every performance is an  invitation  to connect deeply with the audience,” he adds.

Choosing to forgo a summer break for ‘A Wild God’ is a decision Luis embraces wholeheartedly. “I recognize that this isn’t always ideal for my health, but I genuinely enjoy what I do. The joy overshadow the fatigue I feel,” he admits. His unparalleled work ethic and passion for his craft clearly shine through in every word.

In closing, Luis took a moment to share an update on his mother, the distinguished María Luisa Merlo, who is soon to celebrate her 84th birthday. “She is thriving and remains one of the most  modern  and vibrant individuals I’ve known. Her energy is remarkable, and she continues to pursue her artistic endeavors,” he smiles, expressing pride in both her achievements and enduring spirit.
