Unmasking Lunaspy: A Sophisticated Threat to Android Users
A new digital threat is putting thousands of Android users at risk. Lunaspy, an application that masquerades as an antivirus, is, in reality, a sophisticated spyware designed to steal information, spy on its victims, and take control of their devices.
This deceptive security software is distributed outside the Google Play Store, tricking users with an alleged threat analysis to obtain critical permissions and access personal data, such as passwords, location, and even camera and microphone input.
The Rise of Lunaspy
According to a Kaspersky report, the malicious application identified as Lunaspy has been active since February 2025, and it primarily propagates through messaging applications. Attackers send links through messages from legitimate contacts whose accounts have been compromised or from groups that recommend downloading the app.
Interestingly, links to Lunaspy often circulate through Telegram channels, presenting themselves as a bank protection tool or a safety enhancement feature. Once installed, the app simulates a safety scan, shows alleged threats, and requests permissions to “protect” the phone. However, these permissions actually allow it to record audio and video, read messages, access call logs, steal passwords, execute remote commands, track location, and even record the screen.
Examining the Threat
Kaspersky has noted that Lunaspy’s code is also poised to extract photos from the device’s gallery, although this particular function is not yet active.
The information collected is sent to a complex network of command and control servers, composed of at least 150 different IP domains and addresses, making it incredibly challenging to trace and eliminate. The constant evolution of its capabilities renders Lunaspy one of the most dangerous and difficult threats to detect within the Android ecosystem. It serves as a stark reminder of the critical importance of downloading applications only from official sources and utilizing password managers to reduce risks.
