Vox Demands Clarity on Socialist Deputies’ Payroll System

In a significant political  development , the Spanish political party Vox has taken action by filing an initiative that calls for  explanations  from the Congress table regarding the payroll system of socialist deputies. This demand follows the investigation into former minister  José Luis Ábalos . New revelations suggest that the Congress does not record the salaries of these parliamentarians in their personal accounts but rather in a collective account managed by the socialist group, a practice criticized for potentially allowing for  irregularities .

Concerns over  Financial Transparency

The Congress and the  Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE)  have been urged to clarify this  payment system  in light of a request from the Supreme Court judge overseeing Ábalos’ investigation, which revolves around allegations of  financial misconduct  involving kickbacks. Disparities have emerged between the reported income of the former minister and the actual figures reflected in his bank accounts.

The Chamber, which oversees Congress, clarified that the salaries of deputies are deposited into accounts provided by the parliamentarians themselves, while the PSOE explained that the funds first go into a socialist group account. Subsequently, they are distributed to each deputy after deducting contributions that the party classifies as  “donations,”  reflecting an expectation for party members to contribute a portion of their earnings voluntarily.

 Vox’s Accusations of Anomalies

Vox has deemed the procedure “anomalous,” arguing that the Congress does not verify the ownership of the bank accounts that receive these payouts. They maintain that this method creates an environment ripe for “tremendous opacity,” particularly given that the governing body of the Chamber is predominantly controlled by the PSOE, thus raising concerns about a lack of impartiality.

The party asserts that these practices are at odds with the claims of promoting  parliamentary transparency  that have recently been emphasized by Congress. In a bid to uncover the truth, Vox has submitted a series of questions targeting the Congress leadership, utilizing the mechanisms enabled for parliamentary oversight of the government.

 Questions Raised by Vox

The questions posed by Vox include whether all socialist deputies have provided the Congress with written consent for their salaries to be funneled into the group’s bank account. Furthermore, they inquire if the governing body is aware—and if it is legal—that these deputies are compelled to receive their remuneration via a shared bank account.

Additionally, Vox has sought clarification on whether Congress is aware of the legal stipulations regarding  income tax (IRPF)  retentions, social security contributions, and the obligations surrounding donations, as well as if the Tax Agency has communicated any relevant internal notes or agreements concerning the  socialist group ‘s finances.

Implications of Financial Mismanagement

In their inquiries, Vox also raises concerns about the acceptability of donations to a parliamentary group bank account and whether such contributions adhere to current legal standards. This raises questions about the  financial integrity  of the socialist group’s operations and, more broadly, about the reliability of parliamentary practices.

Moreover, the party is pressing for answers concerning the  timeline  of when Congress personnel became aware of this remuneration strategy for socialist deputies and whether any financial audits have been conducted on these payments in recent legislative sessions.

Calls for Accountability

Vox, led by Santiago Abascal, argues that should these allegations be substantiated, they could signify “serious violations” of tax regulations, internal controls within the Congress, and the overarching principle of transparency that should be foundational to parliamentary institutions.

The unfolding political scenario points to the need for rigorous scrutiny and accountability in governmental financial practices. As Vox continues to push for transparency, the implications of this controversy could reverberate across Spanish politics, calling into question the integrity of the systems that govern public servants.
