The  Investigation Commission  on the ‘Koldo Case’ in the Senate is making headlines this Tuesday as it proceeds with the testimonies of key figures involved in the corruption scandal. The two major appearances include  Joseba Antxón Alonso , the Single Administrator of  Servinabar , and  Vicente Fernández , the former president of the  State Society of Industrial Participations (SEPI) . Both are under scrutiny for their alleged roles in this ongoing investigation and will provide insights to help clarify the extensive allegations surrounding the case.

Alonso is scheduled to appear at  11:00 AM , while Fernández will follow at  4 PM . The inquiry comes in the wake of critical findings from the  Central Operational Unit (UCO)  of the  Civil Guard , which recently conducted a search at  Servinabar’s  headquarters in  Pamplona . The search, carried out on  June 10 , aimed to collect documentation pertaining to the awarding of public works contracts, just days prior to the release of police reports involving  Santos Cerdán , the former Secretary of Organization of the  PSOE .

During the search, investigators uncovered a significant document revealing that Cerdán had acquired  1,350 shares —equating to  45%  of Servinabar—for the sum of  6,000 euros . This substantial shareholding raised eyebrows, particularly given the company’s involvement in lucrative public projects, including the  76 million euro  duplication of the  Belate tunnel , which was awarded through a temporary union of companies ( UTE ).

Allegations of Corruption and Corruption Denial

On  July 8 , Alonso denied any allegations concerning the payment of bribes in exchange for public works contracts while testifying before the Supreme Court. He disassociated Cerdán from his company, although he did admit to having made payments to  Koldo García , a ministerial  exassor , for his mediation on private construction projects prior to  2017 .

Alonso responded solely to questions posed by his lawyer during his testimony, asserting that he had always held the position of the sole administrator of  Servinabar . He dismissed the validity of the document the UCO found, which indicated Cerdán’s acquisition of shares, claiming it was merely a draft prepared in  2015  when Cerdán considered exiting politics following poor electoral results for the PSOE in  Navarra . Alonso claimed they never formalized this document since Cerdán ultimately chose to remain in politics.

Fernández’s Testimony and Past Controversies

The stage will then shift to  Vicente Fernández  at  16:00 , a controversial figure whose tenure as president of SEPI ended amid allegations tied to the  Aznalcóllar case . He resigned from his position in  2019  after the  Provincial Court of Seville  reopened an investigation regarding the awarding of the Aznalcóllar mine contracts and subsequently charged him for his prior role as the  Minister of Innovation, Industry, and Tourism  in  Andalusia .

During his statement to the judge in the Aznalcóllar case, Fernández dissociated himself from any culpability, asserting he never provided “instructions” to contest officials regarding the mine’s exploitation award to the  Mexico-Minorbis group , the company ultimately granted the contract.

The Broader Implications of the Koldo Case

As the proceedings unfold, the  Koldo Case  paints a troubling picture of potential corruption at high levels of government and industry, raising critical questions about transparency and integrity in public contracting. Both Alonso’s and Fernández’s testimonies will likely shape public perception and political discourse as the investigation continues. The ramifications of the case extend beyond individual accusations, potentially affecting public trust in institutions and raising alarms over systematic issues within governance.

This investigation reflects a broader trend where allegations of impropriety threaten to derail careers and instigate governmental reform in Spain. As the Senate commission delves deeper, the implications of their findings could resonate for years to come, highlighting the essential need for accountability in public service.
