After the victories against Uruguay and Chile, the Argentine National Team is eager for another triumph against Peru to secure a spot in the semifinals of the Women’s Copa América. The match takes place at the Independent del Valle stadium in Quito, with coverage by DSports and officiated by Brazilian referee Daiane Muniz.
The early stages exhibited a Peruvian team looking to penetrate the goal defended by Solana Pereyra. The Inca side dominated possession and garnered four corner kicks within the first ten minutes.
However, Argentina quickly responded, marking their first significant attempt at goal during the game. Following a well-coordinated play, Daiana Falfán raced down the right wing and delivered a precise center aimed at Kishi Núñez. The attacker had a clear shot on goal but was thwarted by the solid presence of Maryory Sánchez, who denied the opportunity.
Although the early effort by Argentina did not yield results, they gradually took control of the match. Their play showed tangible improvements compared to their previous outings.
As the first half approached its conclusion, Núñez came close again. After turning sharply in the box, she unleashed a shot that whizzed just over the crossbar.
Despite Argentina’s dominance, especially towards the end of the first half, the score remained 0-0 as both teams retreated for halftime.
The second half began on a positive note for the Argentine side. Continuing with the momentum they built at the end of the first period, the Albiceleste pressed forward, posing a significant threat to Sánchez’s goal. Aldana Cometti, the hero from the previous match against Chile, connected with a header on a free kick that narrowly missed the mark, landing just outside the right post.
In the 58th minute, an opportunity arose as substitute Florencia Bensegundo found herself one-on-one with the Peruvian goalkeeper. Unfortunately for her, the shot flew above the crossbar, quashing the chance to score.
Shortly thereafter, Yamila Rodríguez assisted Bensegundo, who made a precision pass to Agostina Holzheier. Facing an open goal, Holzheier’s series of feints didn’t fool Sánchez, who again saved the day with a solid block.
In the following action, the names and circumstances repeated themselves: Holzheier, unmarked again, confronted Sánchez, who made yet another spectacular save to keep her team in the game.
Under the guidance of Germán Portanova, the Argentine squad arrived at the start of this critical match in first place in Group A with six points. A win here would ensure a spot in the knockout stages of the tournament. Their next match will be against the hosts, Ecuador, on Thursday.
In stark contrast, the Peruvian team faced its last game in the tournament without hopes of progressing further after a series of defeats. Led by Emily Lima, the team is set to exit the competition following three consecutive losses: against Chile (0-3), Ecuador (1-3), and Uruguay (0-1).
The outcome of this tournament is not just about winning the continental crown; it also has implications for international representation. According to CONMEBOL regulations, the two teams reaching the final will qualify for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, which will feature an expanded roster of 16 teams. Additional spots will be available for the 2027 Pan American Games in Lima, but since Peru is hosting, it will forfeit its potential qualification.
Moreover, the tournament champion will have the unique opportunity to contest the winner of the 2025 Women’s Euro Cup at the 2026 Finalissima. Unlike previous editions, this tournament will not allocate spots for the World Cup, as those will be determined through separate channels.
