The Recent Heavy Rains in Mexico City: Impact and Government Response
On July 19, Mexico City experienced extraordinarily heavy rains, leading to a crisis situation for its residents. In response, Clara Brugada, the Chief of Government of Mexico City, held a press conference to announce a multifaceted support plan for those affected by the downpour and resulting floods.
The rainfall recorded over the course of the day was staggering, with total accumulated precipitation exceeding 23 million cubic meters. Notably, the San Francisco Stroke area in Magdalena Contreras registered the highest level of precipitation at 60.75 millimeters in less than an hour.
In an effort to prevent further damage, the local government initiated a proactive operational plan known as ‘Tlaloque’. This program included deploying emergency teams across various mayoral offices, including Álvarez Obregón, Azcapotzalco, and Xochimilco, among others.
During the press conference, Molina Brugada reported significant flooding and tree falls, which impacted numerous areas of the city. The most badly affected neighborhoods included Lomas Quebrada and San Jerónimo Lídice, demonstrating the overwhelming effects of the storm.

In light of the serious damages recorded, including 87 properties affected—59 sustaining partial damage, 16 suffering total losses, and 12 displaying structural problems—the government emphasized the need for rigorous evaluations. Alongside property damage assessments, support will also extend to vehicles affected by the floods, necessitating a comprehensive citywide census.
In his comments, Fernando Mercado Guaida, the mayor of Magdalena Contreras, extended gratitude for inter-institutional cooperation in managing the fallout from the intense rains and hail. He reiterated that since the storm began, approximately 1,200 officials across multiple departments have been mobilized to assist affected residents.
“We have embarked on coordinated efforts from the very start, integrating various units to support our community,” he emphasized during the conference.
The mayor also noted that many residences suffered from hail damage, particularly those with vulnerable roofing structures. Areas like San Nicolás and San Francisco faced considerable impacts, and Civil Defense teams have already undertaken urgent response measures.
To facilitate relief efforts, a shelter was also established at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday for residents who lost all their belongings to the floods, providing a crucial support system in a time of need.
In summary, the recent heavy rains in Mexico City have led to significant flooding and property damage. Authorities are taking comprehensive measures to assess the situation, provide adequate support to affected residents, and initiate recovery operations. The collaborative effort between different government departments highlights the urgency and importance of addressing the aftermath of this natural disaster.
