Understanding the ‘Son Scam in Trouble’: A Growing Threat

The warning typically starts with a simple message: “Hello, mom. My phone has broken.” Such messages signal the start of the notorious Son Scam in Trouble, a deceptive scheme that has alarmed authorities and citizens alike for its  high effectiveness . Recently, the National Police dismantled an organization dedicated to perpetrating this scam, which managed to defraud people out of significant amounts of money. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident.

32 Detainees. After an investigation that spanned nine months, law enforcement officials made 32 arrests in the Valencia province alone, uncovering a network that had victimized many. Among those detained, four individuals served as “mules,” facilitating the transfer of funds. The investigation has also resolved  63 complaints  nationwide, amounting to a staggering total of  €320,000 . Furthermore, police efforts resulted in blocking several fraudulent transactions, leading to the recovery of over  €10,000  for the victims.

A Recurring Scam. Despite this significant operation, the ‘Son Scam in Trouble’ is not new. Just over a year ago, The Civil Guard arrested approximately a hundred individuals involved in an elaborate scheme that defrauded victims of  €850,000 . Last July, another operation led to  65 arrests , recovering  €410,000 . Recently, a mother from A Coruña fell victim to this scheme, losing  €5,000 —a case that eventually led to arrests following a formal complaint.

Too Effective. The power of scams circulating via WhatsApp is increasingly concerning; however, the ‘Son Scam in Trouble’ remains particularly devastating for its potential to ensnare victims quickly. As highlighted by the Civil Guard, criminals carefully research their victims. They often target parents whose children are studying abroad or traveling. By creating an  instant emotional connection , scammers induce urgency through messages filled with apparent despair, prompting an instinctual parental need to respond quickly.

Generally, people are cautious when contacted by unknown numbers. However, scammers cleverly leverage the pretext of losing their primary phone, effectively dispelling initial suspicions. If they have accurately targeted their victim, constructing a convincing narrative leads to immediate action, often resulting in a rapid transfer of money.

The Next Level: AI. Some of the more sophisticated scams employ  AI-generated voices  to trick victims. One notable case involved an American who received a call where an AI replicated his daughter’s voice, claiming she was in danger and needed immediate financial assistance. The National Police issued a warning about ‘Voice Hacking’ and suggested an effective protective measure: using a family password to verify identities. How do these scammers replicate voices? Advanced tools like Vall-e require as little as  three seconds  of recorded speech, easily obtained from social media platforms.

Protect Yourself. Although authorities are taking significant steps—like the recent operation in Valencia—completely eradicating this type of scam may prove challenging. Hence,  prevention is paramount . If you receive a suspicious message, it’s crucial to reach out to the real person through a known contact number to confirm their situation. Requesting an audio message can provide clarity, but a video call is even more effective in preventing scams like ‘Voice Hacking.’ Whenever someone urgently requests money, always proceed with caution and skepticism.

In the age of technology, these evolving scams pose serious risks to individuals and families. Awareness and vigilance are the best defenses against falling victim to such fraudulent schemes.
