Sanxenxo Takes Bold Measures to Combat Littering

In the coastal municipality of  Sanxenxo , located in the picturesque  Las Rías Baixas , the local authorities are sending a clear message: they are fed up with trash improperly discarded outside containers. This popular  tourist destination  has found a unique solution to address the issue, which has mounted during the busy summer months. The local cleaning service, alongside the municipal police, has initiated a peculiar task — they are now rummaging through trash bags left outside designated collection points to uncover the identities of those flouting the rules.

The Strategy Behind the Initiative

In a recent statement, the  City Council  emphasized that the waste management contractor,  Ascan , will coordinate with the municipal police to “analyze” litter thrown outside collection points. Their goal is clear: identify those responsible for this inconsiderate behavior. The cleanup crews will be searching for  receipts, cards , or any other identifiable information that could point to the person behind the littering.

Consequences for Littering

For those caught in the act, the consequences could be steep. The City Council of Sanxenxo has made it clear that violations of  Environmental Protection Regulations  could lead to fines of up to  €600 . As stated in Article 39 of the local regulation, dumping trash in unauthorized areas is categorized as a very serious infraction. The city’s authorities are determined to restore cleanliness and detour residents and tourists alike from the act of improper littering.

The Growing Concern

The local government’s dismay is particularly heightened after discovering garbage bags littering popular gatherings in the town center, specifically in areas like  Consistory  and  Praza do Pazo . Despite having a registered population of around  18,000 , the number of visitors can multiply during the summer months, adding strain on waste management services. It is reported that in the high season, the population can increase fivefold, with numerous second homes and a flood of tourists contributing to the waste problem.

During July and August, estimates suggest that the population surges to about  70,000  travelers seeking the beauty of Sanxenxo’s beaches and amenities. To manage the influx of waste generated, the town is equipped with  2,000 containers  and  651 waste islands . However, if the community does not abide by these services, the city may resort to strict penalties to enforce adherence to waste disposal regulations.

Precedents in Garbage Collection Tactics

Sanxenxo is not alone in its decision to dig through garbage for litterbug identification. Other municipalities such as  Seville ,  Barcelona , and  San Sebastián  have attempted similar measures, although the results have varied. In  2015 , San Sebastián’s local government had to stop trash collection workers from searching bags after residents raised complaints about fines they deemed unfair. This illustrates the delicate balance communities must maintain between cleanliness and residents’ rights.

Images from Sanxenxo portray a vibrant beach town, but littering casts a shadow on its appeal. Local authorities believe that measures such as these will deter inappropriate disposal habits and foster a shared responsibility among residents and visitors alike. As such, Sanxenxo’s initiative may not only clean up the streets but also educate the public about respecting communal spaces and the environment.
