King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain have resumed their official agenda together this Monday following their appearance on June 20 in Bruges, Belgium, where they attended the closing ceremony of the Academic Course for the Jacques Delors Promotion 2024/2025 at the College of Europe. Their first commitment of the week involved a visit to the  Monastery of Montserrat , located in the famed “magical mountain” of Barcelona. This visit was part of the central event commemorating the  Millennium of the founding of the Benedictine monastery  by Oliba, the Abbot of Ripoll and Cuixà, and the Bishop of Vic.

This notable visit to such an emblematic site of prayer, spirituality, and pilgrimage in Spain was overshadowed by the presence of dozens of  protesters  expressing their discontent with the monarchy. However, this did not affect Their Majesties, who appeared undeterred by the mild tension between ‘anti-monarchists’ and the  Mossos d’Esquadra  just minutes before their arrival. They were greeted at the monastery with their best smiles.

Dressed in an  ideal summer outfit that inspired many , Queen Letizia dazzled the crowd, giving a second life to one of her most applauded outfits of 2024. She wore a  denim dress  by Carolina Herrera, which she first debuted at the Retina ECO Awards last September. Today was the perfect occasion for her to showcase this dress again.

The dress is a  midi-length design  featuring no sleeves, a round neckline, a fitted bodice, and a gently flared skirt with pleats. Vertical seams create a  slimming effect , enhancing her figure. Additionally, she accentuated the ensemble with a matching belt crafted from the same denim fabric, highlighting her famously slim waistline.

Adding a youthful touch to her look and reducing the formality of the dress, Queen Letizia chose  red accessories . She confirmed her newfound preference for footwear with a pair of  sensible heel Mary Janes  from the brand ‘Sézane.’ With double buckles over the instep, these shoes were seen several times in black over the past few weeks, but today they made their debut in a vibrant  cherry red , matching her leather clutch perfectly. This choice was a complete success!

However, Queen Letizia’s time in Barcelona did not end with the visit to the Monastery of Montserrat. In the afternoon, the Royal couple presided over the  inauguration of a mural  honoring the residents of Badía del Vallés to commemorate the  50th anniversary of the creation of the housing development  that initiated the town’s history.

The Monastery of Montserrat is not just a religious site; it is a cultural symbol for many Catalans and attracts tourists and pilgrims from all over the world. The picturesque landscape surrounding the monastery adds to its spiritual allure, making it a must-visit destination. The complex houses the revered  Virgin of Montserrat , a figure deeply significant to the people of Catalonia. Each year, thousands come to seek blessings and partake in the unique atmosphere of devotion and tranquility.

Protests may have occurred outside, but Their Majesties maintained a focus on their duties, underscoring the importance of the event. Queen Letizia’s fashion choices have always been scrutinized, balancing royal expectations and modern trends. Her ability to combine elegance with practicality continues to solidify her status as a fashion icon.

In recent years, the Royal Family has faced increasing scrutiny and criticism, particularly in the context of Spain’s evolving political landscape. Events like this visit help solidify the monarchy’s relationship with various communities, engaging in cultural and historical dialogues essential for fostering national unity. The inauguration of the mural is another step towards recognizing the past while paving the way for future progress.

With their royal engagements, King Felipe and Queen Letizia remain committed to representing Spain, attending to both traditional and contemporary issues that resonate with the public. Their activities reflect the ongoing efforts to modernize the monarchy while staying rooted in Spain’s rich heritage.

As we reflect on this significant day for the Spanish royal family, it is clear that their responsibilities extend beyond mere ceremonial duties. By embracing their role in contemporary Spain, King Felipe and Queen Letizia are not only honoring their lineage but also actively participating in the ongoing narrative of their nation.
