Massive Disruption: Train Services Halted at Chamartín Station
A significant disruption occurred at the Chamartín-Clara Campoamor station on Thursday due to a power failure that interrupted the flow of AVE trains. The situation arose after a derailment was reported, prompting Adif, the state entity responsible for rail infrastructure, to announce the restoration of some services. However, several trips, including a transfer to Murcia from Ouigo, have been canceled.
As the disruption unfolded, trains heading towards the Levante corridor—which includes cities such as Albacete, Cuenca, Alicante, Valencia, and Murcia—faced significant delays. Meanwhile, trains heading north, reaching areas like Galicia, Asturias, Castilla y León, and Cantabria, also experienced interruptions, although they are gradually resuming operations.
The service interruption began precisely at 14:00 hours. Shortly thereafter, Adif announced the issue, initially attributed to an electrical problem that had been flagged as a signal failure. Despite the gradual resumption of some services, it might take several hours for operations to stabilize fully.
The problem stemmed from the derailment of a train’s lead car, which caused the overhead line to collapse and resulted in an extensive power outage throughout the station and lines connecting to Chamartín.
Adif confirmed that a “failure in the locomotive axle” triggered the electrical outage. Passengers planning to travel to Valencia, Alicante, or Murcia have been advised to refrain from heading to the station, as services remain disrupted.
Despite no injuries reported, the electrical failure halted train operations for a considerable duration. Some services have resumed, with certain trains rerouted through Atocha station for continued travel, particularly those headed to Alicante.
As a result of the delays, hundreds of passengers have gathered at Chamartín station, waiting anxiously as the restoration of train services begins. Unfortunately, many travelers lament the lack of prior communication from Renfe, believing they could have avoided the chaos by staying home instead of facing the uncertainty at the station.
Raúl, who was supposed to travel to Elche at 16:15 to visit his parents, expressed frustration over the sudden cancellation of services. “I had no idea until I arrived, and it doesn’t look like this will resolve any time soon,” he stated, resignation evident as he clutched his suitcase.
The ongoing delays pose a significant challenge for many travelers. A group journeying to Murcia is already considering alternative ways to reach their destination. Ana, who has a critical medical appointment, along with her companions, is contemplating renting a car to arrive on time.
Héctor and Beti, who had planned to depart for Vigo at 16:05, expressed regret for not choosing to drive. They initially believed taking the high-speed train would be quicker. While waiting, they overheard announcements about a train departing for Valladolid with a lengthy one-and-a-half-hour delay.
