Matías Almeyda, cerca de tomar las riendas de Sevilla

Matías Almeyda: The New Hope for Sevilla FC

Sevilla FC is currently on the verge of a significant transformation as it searches for a new manager. All eyes are turning to  Matías Almeyda  as the potential new coach for the upcoming season. Reports from media outlets, including Marca and ABC, indicate that Almeyda has emerged as the frontrunner after Imanol Alguacil, previously the preferred candidate, declined the opportunity.

The Search for a New Coach: Imanol Alguacil’s Departure

The quest for a new head coach for Sevilla began with Imanol Alguacil at the top of the list. After spending six and a half years at Real Sociedad, he was viewed as an ideal candidate due to his extensive experience and successful tenure. Sevilla made substantial efforts to persuade Alguacil, leveraging the  professional football director, Antonio Cordón , to create an enticing project despite financial constraints.

Initial contacts seemed promising; however,  uncertainties  stemming from fiscal limitations—including salary reductions enforced by La Liga’s financial fair play rules—led Alguacil to hesitate. Additionally, an attractive offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Shabab complicated matters, throwing his final decision into doubt.

Matías Almeyda: The Rising Candidate

As a result of the situation with Alguacil, Sevilla quickly shifted focus to alternative candidates. Almeyda’s name resurfaced, now topping the club’s list for coaching prospects. Cordón believes Almeyda possesses the right profile to manage the  transition  and tackle the upcoming challenges facing the club.

Almeyda’s connection with Sevilla is not merely professional; he played as a midfielder for the club during the 1996-97 season. As a coach, Almeyda has carved out an impressive international career with various clubs, including River Plate and Banfield in Argentina, Chivas in Mexico, San Jose Earthquakes in the U.S., and most recently, AEK Athens in Greece. His tenure at AEK was particularly successful, culminating in a league title and a  national cup  during his three seasons there.

Almeyda’s Strengths and Negotiation Potential

Currently without a team, Almeyda’s availability makes negotiations easier for Sevilla. His previous experiences have showcased his ability to build competitive squads and achieve tangible results swiftly—qualities that are highly sought after in Nervión. The rapport between Cordón and Almeyda has also expedited negotiations, allowing discussions to progress quickly.

Despite the synergy between Cordón and Almeyda, his candidacy does not fully align with the club’s initial criteria. Originally, the board aimed to hire a Spanish coach with specific  La Liga  experience to ensure both stability and understanding of the competition. However, as alternatives fell through, Almeyda’s candidacy gained traction. The recent announcement by Ángel Torres regarding José Bordalás’s retention at Getafe further reduced local options, driving Sevilla closer to Almeyda.

The Urgency of the Situation

Sevilla’s urgency in finalizing a coach is increasing, as the management believes it is crucial to secure the right individual as soon as possible. This will allow the club to effectively plan the pre-season training and refurbish the squad while navigating La Liga’s economic scrutiny. Almeyda’s  international experience , combined with his past affiliation with Sevilla and Cordón’s full confidence in him, positions him as the leading candidate for the role.

The Current State of Sevilla FC

Last season, Sevilla managed to avoid relegation to the Segunda División, finishing just one point above Leganés. As of now, the team’s roster does not include any Argentine players, with only the Brazilian defender  Marcão  being a South American presence within the squad.

In terms of accomplishments, Sevilla’s trophy cabinet consists of one Primera División title, five Copa del Rey titles, one Supercopa de España, seven Europa League titles (a record), and one UEFA Super Cup. This rich history adds to the pressure and expectations placed on the future coach.

In summation, Sevilla FC is poised for a new era under potential coach Matías Almeyda. With the club’s commitment to change and the coach’s proven track record, fans eagerly anticipate how this decision will shape their team moving forward.
