The Vibrant Street Parade Begins
- The grand street parade commenced at around 13:30 in Berlin-Friedrichshain.
- Close to 70 participating groups, with an expected audience of 650,000.
- Traffic restrictions implemented around the Frankfurter Allee & Karl-Marx-Allee area.
The traditional street parade marks the highlight of the four-day Karneval der Kulturen . This year, the lively procession took place not in Kreuzberg and Neukölln , as it has historically, but in Friedrichshain. The parade kicked off at the junction of Frankfurter Allee and Proskauer Straße , advancing over Karl-Marx-Allee and concluding around Karl-Marx-Allee and Berolina Straße . The final group is expected to set off around 19:00.
A Diverse Ensemble of Performers
In total, 68 groups comprising around 4,000 performers participated this year. Among them, 13 groups are making their debut at the festival. “Some have been part of the Karneval for over 20 years,” stated Anna-Maria Seifert , co-leader of the event. 22 groups consist solely of Berlin residents, while others received enthusiastic support from performers across other German states. The move to Friedrichshain, although somewhat forced due to construction work on Gneisenaustraße , has nevertheless resulted in an exciting new route.
Traffic Woes and Police Presence
Motorists must brace for restrictions throughout the day around Frankfurter Allee and Karl-Marx-Allee . The Traffic Information Center (VIZ) in Berlin has outlined several closures for the event. In anticipation of the parade, police towed approximately 125 improperly parked vehicles early Sunday morning. Owners will face fines and towing fees.
On parade day, around 1,500 police officers will be deployed to ensure safety. Law enforcement is supported by officers from Brandenburg , North Rhine-Westphalia , and Saxony . Additionally, the Johanniter first aid service will be present along the parade route to assist visitors.
Environmental Awareness and Festival Activities
To minimize environmental impact and improve conditions for local residents, organizers urge attendees to reduce waste and dispose of it responsibly. Attendees are encouraged to avoid glass bottles and to properly manage cigarette butts. Food will be served in leaf plates instead of plastic, and drinks will be available in reusable cups . Following the parade, a clean-up event is scheduled for Monday to further emphasize sustainability.
Celebrating Diversity in Berlin
The open-air street festival, already underway, began on Friday and will continue until Whit Monday . The children’s parade, held on Saturday, traversed from Mariannenplatz in Kreuzberg to Görlitzer Park . The Karneval der Kulturen, which originated in 1996 , aims to combat racism and promote diversity and coexistence through vibrant celebrations and artistic expressions.
