Tragic Fire in Diyarbakır: Four Lives Lost in 13-Storey Building

A  devastating fire  broke out in a  13-storey  residential building located in Rojava Site,  Fırat Neighborhood , on  566 Street  in the central district of  Kayapınar , Diyarbakır. The exact cause of the fire remains  unknown , but local authorities are investigating.

Following the emergency call, a significant number of teams from  AFAD  (Disaster and Emergency Management Authority),  UMKE  (Emergency Health Services), fire departments,  112 Emergency Health , and police were dispatched to the scene.

As  thick smoke  engulfed the building, residents were evacuated. Some individuals were rescued using a  basket crane  due to the hazardous conditions. A total of  17 individuals , including children, were transported to local hospitals after being affected by the smoke. Unfortunately, four of them later succumbed to their injuries.

Diyarbakır Province Governor  Murat Zorluoğlu  visited the injured at  Gazi Yaşargil Training and Research Hospital . In a statement to reporters outside the hospital, he expressed his condolences, stating that a tragic incident occurred just before the  Eid al-Adha  celebrations, leading to the loss of four citizens’ lives.

During his visit, Governor Zorluoğlu detailed that  three children  were among those who lost their lives due to smoke inhalation. He praised the rapid response of the  firefighters, AFAD, UMKE,  and police units, noting that more than  30 people  were successfully evacuated from the building.

Among the casualties were a mother named  Bircan Çavdar  along with her children,  Yunus Emre  (12), and twins  Elif  and  Zeynep  (4). Their remains were sent to the  Diyarbakır Forensic Medicine Institute  for an autopsy as investigations continue. The cause of the fire is suspected to stem from the  electrical control panel .

Investigation Underway: Justice Minister’s Assurance

 Justice Minister Yılmaz Tunç  took to social media to express his sorrow regarding the incident. He extended condolences to the families of the deceased and confirmed that the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has initiated a  criminal investigation  into the fire. Two prosecutors have been appointed to ensure a thorough inquiry is conducted.

Governor Zorluoğlu also reassured the public that the investigation is comprehensive and any negligence will be dealt with accordingly. He emphasized that the  emergency services  promptly managed the crisis, asserting that the situation has been under control.

As community members grapple with the impact of this tragedy, Governor Zorluoğlu urged for collective strength and unity. The devastating loss has cast a shadow over the festive season, leaving many in mourning.
