Traffic Jam Chaos During Ascension Weekend
As the Ascension weekend unfolded, drivers across France experienced significant delays on the road. Forecasts from Bison Futé, the traffic advisory service, predicted a difficult and extremely congested Sunday, particularly on June 1st. However, these warnings turned into an understatement as traffic conditions worsened considerably.
By early evening, traffic congestion reached its peak, with nearly 1,245 kilometers of traffic jams reported nationwide. This figure not only exceeded predictions but also highlighted the enormity of the situation . Bison Futé had already anticipated challenging conditions, but the reality proved to be far more daunting.

Major Roadways Affected
Among the most heavily congested routes was the A7 , often referred to as the “Autoroute du Soleil” , which connects Paris to Lyon . As night approached, this highway reported approximately 60 kilometers of traffic jams. The A61 (connecting Toulouse to Narbonne ) and the A10 (linking Paris to Bordeaux ) were also severely affected, with congestion levels reaching 47.5 kilometers and 41.5 kilometers , respectively.
Travel times escalated dramatically, with motorists facing delays of over 3.5 hours for a route that typically takes just over 2.5 hours . This substantial increase in travel time left many drivers feeling frustrated and anxious.
Reactions from Drivers
Social media was rife with complaints as many drivers shared their disappointment and frustration during their travels. One user mockingly remarked, “Nice traffic on the A7,” while another expressed that they had never experienced a drive worse than navigating through the Mont Blanc tunnel . Accounts flooded in of individuals spending over two hours stuck in traffic mirroring the sentiment: “ 20 km of traffic jams, and it just keeps going,” concluding with a solemn vow to avoid that road in the future.
Underlying Causes of Traffic Jams
While some may attribute these delays to traffic accidents , particularly on the A10 and A7 , the majority of the congestion could be traced back to the holiday weekend. Significant traffic volume is expected on holiday Sundays like this one, with families returning from various destinations across France.
Future Expectations
According to forecasts from France Bleu , traffic complications will continue well into the evening, particularly on the A10 in the Île-de-France region and the A13 (connecting Paris to Caen ). Drivers should prepare for extended travel times and potential disruptions as the heavy traffic persists.
