In the wake of Paris SG’s historic UEFA Champions League victory, a police officer was severely injured by an accidental firework projectile, leading to his placement in a medically induced coma. This incident occurred in Coutances, a town in the Manche region of France. According to initial police reports, the officer sustained an injury to his eye caused by an unexpected blast during celebrations at the square in front of the local cathedral.
“There are currently few concrete details available,” stated Gauthier Poupeau, the public prosecutor of Coutances, to AFP. He confirmed that an investigation has been initiated to address “voluntary violence against a public officer.” Poupeau expressed concern over the officer’s condition, specifically after the injury sustained above the eyebrow. Following his injury, the officer was transported by helicopter to the CHU of Caen, where he underwent surgery on the morning of the incident.
In Support of Coutances During a Jazz Festival
“We offer our full support to our colleague who was gravely injured in the face by a mortar blast in Coutances while on reinforcement duty from Rennes,” responded the Ille-et-Vilaine departmental bureau of the Alliance police union on social media. Frédéric Gallet, a representative from Alliance 35, condemned the dangerous use of fireworks , emphasizing the potential for harm to anyone nearby, not just law enforcement. “Today, a colleague and his family are suffering. It could have been anyone—a child, a bystander,” he remarked.
