One year before the municipal elections, the Gard political community is in full swing. The end of the reign of two mayors Les Républicains (LR), Jean-Paul Fournier, at the head of Nîmes since 2001, and Max Roustan, the councilor of Alès, the sub-prefecture, since 1995, has resumed the maps of the local political chessboard, where the National Rally (RN) does not hide its ambitions. Especially since in Nîmes – 150,000 inhabitants, the largest city in France currently in the hands of the Republicans – the mayor’s succession takes place in a climate of strong tension within the torn majority.
The announcement, on January 23, of the candidacy for the municipal elections of the first deputy, Julien Plantier, a young disciple of the mayor, while the president of the community of agglomeration Nîmes Métropole, Franck Proust, a very close to the councilor, was also in the ranks, opened a deep crisis.
