The negotiations on a new agreement on inclusive working life broke down last week, when the government gave up the attempt. LO will formally deal with the matter at a meeting later this morning, but everything indicates that the employee organization will temporarily break cooperation with the employers in NHO. The aim of the agreement on inclusive working life is, among other things, to reduce sickness absence. The reason why the negotiations ran aground was primarily that Næringslivets Hovedorganisaison (NHO) and LO each issued an ultimatum on the sick pay scheme: LO wants to preserve the scheme for four years, while NHO wants to investigate it with a view to cuts. Now LO seems to be escalating the conflict and notified NHO this morning that they will break off the collaboration if a new agreement is not put in place within a short time, according to what news learns. Neither LO nor NHO wish to comment on the matter. LO and NHO collaborate in several important areas to promote a good working life. For example, they have various industry programmes, where they provide close follow-up and special facilitation in industries with a particularly high level of sickness absence. The two organizations are also pillars of the important tripartite cooperation in Norway, where the salary settlement is the most important. But it is a long time until the next pay settlement, and it is unclear whether the conflict that has now flared up will have any consequences.
