Key Dates for the 2026 Presidential Elections in Colombia
Colombia is gearing up for a pivotal political process in 2026, with both legislative and presidential elections set to shape the country’s future. The National Registry of Civil Status has outlined crucial dates for the electoral calendar, and it’s vital for citizens to stay informed.
Presidential Election Schedule
The first round of presidential elections is scheduled for May 31, 2026. This day will determine the next head of state for the subsequent constitutional period. If no candidate receives the requisite majority, a second round will be held on June 21, 2026.
Candidate Registration and Modifications
The registration for presidential candidates opens on January 31, 2026. Candidates, along with promoters of blank votes, will have until March 13, 2026 to submit their nominations. Following this, there will be a grace period until April 30, 2026, for amendments in case of changes due to constitutional or legal reasons.
Voting Logistics for Abroad Citizens
To enhance participation, Colombian citizens residing abroad can vote between May 25 and 31, 2026, accommodating the needs of the diaspora and ensuring their voices are heard.
Increasing Voting Stations
The electoral authorities have announced plans to expand the number of voting stations. For the presidential elections, the number of tables will increase from 102,000 to approximately 125,000, facilitating greater voter access and participation.
Candidates and Political Landscape
Several candidates have already declared their intentions to run for the presidency. Notable names include Iván Cepeda from the Historical Pact, Abelardo de la Espriella from the Defenders of the Homeland, and Sergio Fajardo from the Dignity and Commitment movement, among others. The final list may expand following the outcomes of internal party consultations known as the “Great Consultation.”
Legislative Elections and New Congress
The presidential elections coincide with legislative elections to select new members of Congress. The new legislature will take office on July 20, 2026, followed by the presidential inauguration on August 7, 2026.
As Colombia approaches these crucial elections, public participation and awareness will be key to shaping the country’s future in the years to come.
